Hey Indiehackers.
I'm thinking about building an app that tackles the problem of software documentation going out of date. As part of this, I definitely need to talk to people about how they handle documentation, pain points etc.
Since I'm new to this, I'm stuck on the following:
I'm not sure how to hone in on my target market. It's obviously software companies, but I'm not sure whether to target large companies who have lots of docs, but teams for it; or small companies who have few docs, but little process.
When I reach out, do I reach out to people who would use the software, or people who would buy the software?
I want to basically survey people. Is it rude to reach out then send them a link to a survey? should I present the questions via email?
Thanks for any advice.
there is more to the question but consider this: Your choice whether to target big or small companies directly impacts question #2. In bigger companies often the people who buy software are not necessarily the people who use it. this makes the sales process much harder. It's also a question in which direction you want to go, since I believe (but don't know) that the pain points of software companies of different sizes are also different.
I wrote a little bit about it above but right now you don't want to sell your software but talk to people who are going to use it to make sure that they love what you build. So this would make me reach out to people who use the software.
I'm not really sure about this point but I would ask in the first email whether you may send them a link to a survey. Another question is whether a survey is the best format. Maybe it's better to talk to them over skype or phone to get a better feeling for their problems. But I'm not sure.
