Helping cities organize and write waste/recycling/compost disposal guidelines

I noticed there are fragmented attempts by cities to write waste disposal guidelines.

Can you recycle plastic bags in San Francisco? What about Berkeley? What about Tokyo? Is there an app that could answer it all?

Many waste disposal guides also don't have enough granularity in their answers to be helpful. For example, some coffee cups cannot be composted because they have plastic linings. Others might be, depending on how the item is created and local facilities' readiness. Existing sites fail to capture the nuance.

This app aims to enable the organization and crowdsourcing of disposal info for any item, anywhere.

I think this is a great idea. I’ve had similar problem. I also think there is opportunity to have a newsletter informing people how to more eco friendly dispose of waste, ways to reuse or access compostible packaging etc.

A mobile app with photos would really help here.
I’ve heard of people training some ML to tell people what time of waste.

I wonder if there is some partnership with waste companies that could help solve some mutual problems. (I don’t know the space but think it’s interesting)

Could large companies like whole foods / grocery chains be able to partner and get some badges or recognition for being part of it. Win-win

Also wonder if there is an opportunity for being the marketplace for eco friendly packaging suppliers and businesses requiring them. Could improving the supply chain of eco friendly packaging be a place to make long term good.

    Anyway just some thoughts

Thank you for sharing! I like those ideas as well.
Here are some companies whose related work I find inspiring:
      https://remark.eco/
      https://www.litterati.org/
      https://www.smartersorting.com/
      https://loopstore.com/

Admittedly, those companies I think are tackling deeper problems than what my app tries to do. As a side project indie hacker, I'm starting much smaller. Looking forward to graduating to those bigger missions someday though.

    Hey Joseph,

    How's it going?

This is with regards to your project https://www.mywaste.info. I'm planning to create a community around recycling plastic and more. As I'm dealing in RPET material on regular basis. Hence, I thought of bringing recycler, traders, manufacturers and students on one platform would be great. We do have similar goals and if possible I would like to collaborate with you in some way possible or build a community together. Let me know your thoughts on it.

Hi ShalinDoshi, I apologize for the many months delay. I let this project fall to the backburner as I just became a parent. Are you still working on this?

Firstly Congratulations on becoming a parent. I'm interested in starting again. Any views on the same? Also, what's the best way to reach you.

thank you! I'll email you my contact.
