Here's how you get over the fear of rejection when doing cold outreach (calls + emails)

I've been doing outbound sales for over a decade working at early stage startups, including my own.

Never have I had brand equity or awareness where people knew my company. It's as cold as it gets. I do it for my current startup.

In no way do I mean to brag but I want to show you it works and provide a recent example. I just signed a new client to $1,200 a month for 12 months (he can cancel after month 3) via cold outreach. I sent around 25 emails for this campaign, ignored 20 times, rejected straight up 2 times, and 2 convos went nowhere. 1 closed.

Here's how you get over the fear of rejection when doing cold outreach (calls + emails)

  1. The first thing to remember is that your success is directly related to your activity. The more calls and emails you make, the more success you'll see. So you need to do it. Half assing it wont work.

  2. The quality of your outreach impacts your success but with enough data you get better with time. Youll understand what messages resonate, you'll understand who to target, and more importantly, you'll become more confident.

  3. Success feels 100X better than rejection.

  4. Rejection sucks but it's very temporary. And you should be getting rejected enough that rejection blends together .

  5. You'll be ignored more than you'll be rejected. Most people wont respond to your emails or even pick up the phone.

  6. Write down 100 "L's" on a piece of paper and cross them off every time you get rejected. You'll almost certainly get a few wins before you have 100 rejections. If you aren't booking meetings before your 100 rejections, you're doing something wrong. This assumes your product solves a problem and you're targeting the right market.

  7. Most people are nice or neutral to cold outreach. Some people are gigantic assholes but you don't want to do business with them anyway.

  8. You build a rejection callous the more you do it. You become numb to rejection over time. It sucks for 5 seconds but it doesn't ruin your day.

  9. Success is almost guaranteed with effort. Yup. I work with a lot of different startups. The ones who see success from cold outreach are doing it a lot more than the ones who don't do it at all. You'll also take an iterative approach so you get better the more you do it. How good will it feel to succeed?

Great tips! Thanks a lot for sharing.

Here's a concern I always have: Whenever I send out cold emails (usually personalized emails, one by one), I worry about being put onto spam lists. How do you deal with that?

You need to send a lot of bad emails for that to happen. You will be fine if you send mostly personalized and one by one. If you're targeting the right people and not sending too many follow ups, they wont mark you as spam
