Hi, I'm Allison. I'm building Journaleo, a visual goal diary.

Hey! My name is Allison. I've been on Indie Hackers for 2 years now, still hustling through to make my first meaningful dollars 😄. You can't give up!

I'm building Journaleo, a visual goal diary. You can keep track of your goals, record all your milestones, and celebrate your progress.

Keep track of your goals with Journaleo

I decided to build Journaleo out of my own experience (as well as some friends). Last summer (2022), I had 2 huge goals: getting my breakouts under control and doing a pull-up. I used the default Notes app to document my skin every week and the default Camera app to document every pull-up attempt.

Even though it worked, there were a couple of things that didn't make this process delightful:

  • My progress was scattered throughout my camera roll in between food pics, family pics, etc.
  • I found documenting and organizing slow and inconvenient.
  • I couldn't easily see a before and after.
  • I'd forget to consistently document and would sometimes lose momentum.

So I built Journaleo to scratch my own itch. We just went live on the app store not too long ago! Check it out if you're interested :). I would love to hear if you have any thoughts or feedback.

Would this be good for someone taking pictures of your body for tracking gym progress?

Just thought this would be great use for that and one marketing angle in form of blog post might be how inaccurate body composition analysers like bioelectrical impendance analysis is and how taking pictures with good lighting with the same environment is superior to that. Its not hard to find studies about the inaccuracies of those machines.

I'm super interested in tracking gym progress and all the fancy things you could measure your progress and more I read about them I've come to the conclusion that pictures and measurement tape is the most accurate and useful way

Hey Erik! I definitely think this would be good for tracking gym progress! I have a friend who's trying to get back into a fitness routine. He's using the app to track his weight loss.

For me, all the fancy metrics and analytics are definitely interesting and have its value. But, seeing my own progress before my eyes just make me smile and proud.

Hello, this is a great idea! I've had the same problem and this will help me. I had a bit of trouble using the app though. When it asked for microphone permissions, I said no originally. I went to settings and enabled microphone permissions, but now my app is in a bad state. On the main profile page I just see a grey rectangle. I tried quitting and restarting and it's still just grey. When I take a picture it requires me to add a goal, but I can't find where to add goals. Do you know what I should do to debug? Excited to try it!

Ah! Hey Rosmine. Thanks so much for checking it out! I'm so sorry about that. I missed this case :(. I'll put a patch out as soon as I can.

For now, I fixed it manually! Could you try restarting the app now? It fingers crossed should work now! Let me know!

Dang, I wish I could fix my own bugs that fast. It works now! Thank you so much!

I don't know if you'll see this, hopefully you get a notification.
I meant to use Journaleo but forgot until I got a notification that my free trial was ending. I'd suggest that if someone hasn't opened to the app in a day, then you give a notification reminding them.

That's a good idea! I think you still have 2 days left right? Let me know if you don't get a chance to try it out. I'd be happy to reset it or upgrade you :).

This app is very useful and can attract many users with the right marketing strategy.

The app has a clear and simple value proposition: keep a visual diary for your goals. Minimal and elegant design that is easy to use and navigate.

Going forward, if you still want to add some more features maybe you can add more options for journaling, such as voice recording, mood tracking, gratitude prompts, etc.

Thanks Debajit for the support and feedback! Those are some awesome ideas. The wheels are turning!

Love this! I‘ve personally had this problem (tried to document my skin clearing up too and also growing hair back out from a short cut) and tried just using the Notes app with pictures. My main problem was consistency. I think having reminders and the pictures side by side would’ve helped.

I tried using the app but it wasn’t clear how to create a goal. When you add a recording to progress it also requires to be associated with a goal to be saved, however clicking on “add goal” doesn’t seem to be working.

I am a fan of the idea though! I’d love to use it to document progress on my side project. An option to export data to turn it into blog posts would be nice too. Keep at it!

hey Heilly! Thanks so much for trying it out and letting me know what you ran into! I sadly forgot an edge case in the create profile flow. I fixed it manually for now and will ship a patch asap!

If you restart the app, it should work. You can create a new goal with 'add goal.' Let me know if it does the trick!

Also, I love your ideas. Something with an option to turn it into long-form content would be awesome. Thanks for giving me something to think about!
