Hiring
Due to work and my app growing quite rapidly, I'm looking to hire a developer to clean my code. I'm wondering if I should watch out for anything.

So far:
- OK to sign NDA
- He's expensive but I'm doing 10 hours a month for now just to refactor code
- He wants access to the github repo
- All environment variables are kept out of the repo, and he would only get the credentials for a duplicate test database and functions on Firebase
I was hoping he would just make commits to the repo, then I'd review them, pull them into master after testing.
Just trying to think of anything I'm missing before I make my first contract-hire.

Start small and go from there?
if this is your first time using something like upwork... tbh, you're just going to have to learn how to work that process and find the right fit.
i know that's not very helpful, but, if you're not very knowledgeable about software engineering (the languages, the technologies, the usual costs associated, etc...) then you're going to be "flying blind" until you have more "seat time".
or... you can find someone you trust, a technical cofounder or engineer, who can do the vetting for you. that would be a much better solution.
if you're technical, then, just go for it, try it, and if he sucks, fire them. you'll know almost instantaneously.
I cannot see that profile, but in general be aware of freelancers that try to compensate for reduced skill with reduced price.
My company gets a lot of highly profitable business from people who tried to save money by hiring cheap. And then they end up paying our premium rates and additional rush fee for us to save their semi-failed project at the last minute.
So especially if you only hire part-time, you'll want an expensive full stack developer who will personally take on full ownership and responsibility for making your project a success.
I have seen many initiatives fail because of the "he said she said" blame shifting that inevitably starts when you hire a team of mediocre developers where no single person understands all of the components.
Thanks - I'll probably take a few days to re-consider. I think I'm just having a hard time finding a great dev to help me with references (or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place).
Though something pretty interesting happened yesterday. I was looking at other options, and filtered to my local area in case I wanted to meet this dev in person, and I came across a familiar face!
About 10 years ago I was in another industry and I'll never forget a particular client. He was a stay at home programmer, incredibly nice. Low and behold, he comes up at Upwork listing the entire tech stack I built my product in. I got chills, the universe connecting paths again a decade later.
We're starting to talk more, but I think I may have found my guy. We'll see how it goes this week.
