HN notification service

I'm considering to build HN notification service. I'd like to ask you, would you like to use such service? Service will:

  • notify you about hot posts
  • notify you about posts with selected key word
  • notify you if someone will reply to you post/comment
  • notify if people that you follow submit
  • notify you when is the best time to submit (based on users activity)
  • track your karma in time

Do you think such service can be useful? Do you think it will be worth 29$ per month? Thank you!

useful but definitely not worth 29$/month for me.

    1. 1

      what price it is worth?

Is it possible to build this as a desktop app and run the service locally? That way you could charge people a one time fee...

What I think would be useful is the ability to be notified if someone posts a link on HN to your blog, github project, or whatever online asset that belongs to you.

Yes, it can be a desktop app, good idea! with web-service I don't need to deal with compatibility with different OS.

I like idea with notification based on URL. Thank you! :)

I think you would have more success leveraging your technology to help people post promoted content to social media. That service (if it works) could easily charge $290/month, whereas you're not going to get anyone here to pay $9/month let alone $29.

Got you! Thanks! I will try to push into this direction :)

For example, if you could get my Code For Cash month 5 revenue report (coming on Friday) to the top of Hacker News and /r/entrepreneur, without vote manipulation or otherwise violating the Sites' ToS, I would definitely pay $200

I'm logging HN users activity over time. To get to the top you need to have good title, interesting content and good timing. I can provide you information about good time to post. We can try if you want!

Sure, email me, zack@codefor.cash – if my content gets to the frontpage based on your advice, I will pay you a consulting fee.

It'll definitely be useful. Are you asking if it's worth $29/month for you or for users? If for users, I would guess no but I could be wrong. As a user, I wouldn't pay for anything unless it's a one time charge for the app.

      Thank you!

  5. 2

    sorry.. not worth the 29$.

    1. 1

how much should I charge for such service in your opinion?

      1. 2

I wanted to suggest Later for reddit too.. @ezekg already did that :)

        1. 1

Thank you! :) Do you think that charging 9$ will be reasonable?

Thanks, I think the most useful feature can be notification about optimal time when to submit post (based on current activity on HN) - this can be important for startups which are posting their product. What should be the price?
