Hey everyone! ๐
I've built an iOS app and browser extension called Affordab.ly. It's a crypto cashback platform that pays you bitcoin and ethereum when you shop at one of our 10,000+ partner stores.
I'm concerned that the words "free" and "crypto" could set off peoples "scam detectors" so I've made an effort to explain how it works to hopefully reassure people.
With that in mind I'd really like some feedback on...
Thanks!
Hey Tobi, I did a think out loud recording for you: https://www.loom.com/share/14dce51a14d5461ca7356b49703d24f6
Thanks Erich! I can't tell you enough how incredibly useful this was to watch. I've just signed up to UX swaps as I'd love more feedback in this medium :)
I will say that I found it incredibly frustrating to see the issues you were having with certain things not loading. I think if they had, you would have seen what you were expecting. The offers page that didn't load contained that long list of stores that you said you wanted to see. Also when you went to adidas, there should be a little popup that appears to say you can earn on that site. I expect the reason it didn't is related to the offers not loading. As always, more server power will probably be the answer! I'll make sure this is fixed over the next day or so. Watching you have those issues were exactly what I needed to see so even though I found it frustrating, it was extremely valuable.
I'll be sure to set up a test on UX swaps. May I also contact you using the email you used to sign up? I'd love to keep in touch and ensure the issues you had have been fixed.
Hey Toby, makes me really happy to hear this was so valuable! The frustration is normal - I experience the same kind of pain when people test my stuff. But hey, that's kind of the point and that's what makes testing so valuable. Don't stress yourself out, I'm happy to test again once you've got an update coming.
Great, thanks Erich!
Hey, I loved your product. I think you can work on your website loading speed. It took 4-5 seconds to load. Also, another question for you - how is your product different from honey?
Thanks for reporting that. I'll certainly look into improving it. I know there are some low hanging fruit tasks I can do to improve the speed.
To answer your question regarding honey. Honey is first and foremost a discount codes extension. I'm a big fan of it in fact. It's great at giving you discount codes when you checkout. I've used it's UX as inspiration for some screens on Affordab.ly.
They've implemented cashback more recently. They do this by giving you "honey gold" when you shop that can be converted to vouchers only (for spotify, amazon etc). In my experience it's pretty poor at this. I've had this functionality for years and I've only earned $20 worth in vouchers (I just checked). In fact apparently I can only convert $10 because I'm just shy of the $20 voucher. There are users on Affordab.ly who have been using it for a matter of weeks and are already into the hundreds of dollars. If you use it for big ticket items like flights or hotels then you can quite easily earn over $100 in one transaction.
As I said honey also only lets you convert this to vouchers, not even cash and certainly not crypto. It's a different tool. Their discount codes functionality is pretty good, the cashback side is very lacking.
Keep up the good Job. Its a user friendly website
Thanks!
Congratulations on your launch! Great one as your app must be new after publishing, you will need help reaching your target audience, so you must list your app on a platform called AppsHive, and you can increase your app downloads by 43% with targeted users.
You can check out the platform here: http://bit.ly/3Fl2C6m
Thanks Dustin! I'll be sure to do that ๐
The site looks good! one suggestions - signing in through Metamask can make it easier for crypto enthusiasts. All the best!
Yes another commenter mentioned this. Feedback here has certainly made me consider the need to add support for self-custody wallets and you've added support to that. Seems I may need to reorder my todo list a little. Thanks for the feedback!
Great landing page. User friendly interface & easy to understand product. The more maintstream crypto becomes globally, customers will see this product as very value adding in terms of cashback
Thanks! I'm certainly hoping thats the case!
It looks pretty good. And the video is nice. It puts you in thrust by explaining how it works. At least, that's how I felt.
Great! I'm glad people like the video. It was a late addition. Thanks!
The step 1,2,3 can be better in terms of visual. We need to quickly get the idea without even having to read so maybe use images/symbols etc
Seems a few people agree with you ๐ I'll be sure to update, thanks for your input!
Great landing page, I understand your product in like 2 sec, reading the hero texts. I think it's really great, just add CTA section and buttons. Feedback from design and dev agency owner.
Thanks! You're right I've only got at the top and bottom so I'll be sure to add more :)
I don't want to push everything, but my company might help you with the design work: designpulse.co.
Email: [email protected]
Hey @affordably,
I will suggest adding some more Call To Action buttons, for example, right after the video or nearby because after watching the video, I might think to try it, but there is no CTA.
Thanks Boris! An easy and no-brainer addition to make. I'll be sure to add.
Your product looks awesome! I am actually considering giving it a try, as I am myself a crypto enthusiast. However, I understand that people outside crypto world could see it as something scammy. Maybe, you can share testimonials on your landing in order to make it look more reliable. I have a crypto project as well at givebtc.tips/SendMoneyToTheFuture and I experienced a similar entry barrier, with some clients questioning the legitimacy of the site, which can be really frustrating
Thanks for the feedback! I have actually added testimonials further down the page but people have already pointed out the lack of user images is an issue. I'd love to have some "As seen on Forbes" sort of things but all in good time! I suppose I can have "As seen on Indie Hackers" now but unfamiliar people might wtf at the sight of "hackers" ๐
Glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing consumer concern around that. It does feel particularly bad at the moment (thanks FTX!). Please feel free to sign up and give it a try, I'd love to hear your feedback. I'm happy to take advice from you on UX by the way as I think your site looks great! ๐
Thanks for the reply! Actually I also think your site looks very good in terms of UI/UX.
I see your testimonials now but as you say would be better with real pictures instead. I am also experiencing a problem from Opera browser, that the embeded video does not show
I see, thats interesting about opera. I haven't tested there. We don't have an opera extension. An edge extension may be next. They aren't that difficult to port across its just having to manage releases on so many platforms can be a pain. The website should work there though at least so I'll take a look. Thanks for letting me know!
I think the design is nice and promising, but I would change the numbers in the "As simple as 1,2,3." section into self-explaining icons.
Thanks! I've certainly picked up that visuals beats text every time ๐
Looks great to me.
Just a small suggestion: Mobile store buttons have rounded corners. You could make the extension store buttons rounded so it will look consistent. For the Mozilla button, the contrast seems to be low, you can improve that.
I see what you mean. I simply used the official assets from the various app stores and missed that small touch. Thanks for pointing it out ๐
You're welcome :)
We need Google auth :)
Google auth is now implemented! ๐
You're not the first person to mention this, I'll bump it up the todo list!
Hey Toby,
I quickly ran your website through pagespeed https://pagespeed.web.dev/report?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.affordab.ly%2F&form_factor=mobile
It got 34/100 performance on mobile, I think you can improve on that by reducing unused JavaScript and CSS
https://pasteboard.co/jVko9KysRWST.jpg
also, you can use the image format WEBP instead of PNG which can increase your website speed
talking about design, It's good it's simple and to the point.
you can use scrollcue.js to animate things but it's optional and up to you.
I wouldn't use this because I don't spend much money + I don't wanna save a few dollars and then wait for 7-30 days just to get into my wallet. but I am sure there are lots of people who will find this useful.
Thanks! It's been on my list to go through the pagespeed recommendations. I am aware that improvements can be made. It's not that uncommon even on established sites to get a score like that on mobile but I agree there are some quick wins I can make. All in good time!
Thanks for your positive feedback on the design and product in general. I'm generally not a huge fan of things like parallax and over-animation in general so I think I'll steer clear of adding any though.
Looks like your Heroku App is throwing an Application Error - you're account might have been banned because of "crypto"...
But my honest opinion is that the crypto hype is finally fading (thanks AI) and I would be interested to see if your use of crypto actually is a net positive.
I was able to see a partial version on web.archive.org and saw "earn up to 40% back" - that definitely feels scammy and I'd like to see an example of that. Or is that relying on Ether going up 39% after my 1% cashback?
Otherwise, affiliate commission and cashback is nothing new (see Rakuten & Co) but exchanging the funds always seems a bit tricky (PayPal, bank transfers etc) - could be that crypto could step in here but afaik still not great for small transactions.
Thanks for the feedback! It seems that I simply need to bump up the heroku dynos to avoid that application error. I see Eric had a similar issue above.
I think whatever your opinion of crypto is, it's certainly proven at least that it's here to stay. We are in a lull right now though which does happen every couple of years. I'm not sure it's as a result of the AI boom but I do see your point that AI's got the spotlight right now and is no doubt the future. I just don't think it's one or the other. It does certainly have a trust problem as a result of things like the FTX scandal which it will need to get over. This is what I need to wrestle with, hence my question about seeming genuine and not scammy.
There are indeed purchases that will give you 40% back. This isn't typical though and tends to be for things like signing up to some subscription software, a casino, trading platform, new bank account etc. For typical ecom purchases like buying a product at an online store you'll usually get around 5% which is the norm. I can put something that makes that clearer so thanks for pointing that out.
You're right that its a crypto twist on a tried and tested cashback model. I'm hoping it will separate us from the crowd. I also think that our method of focussing on extensions gives us a better user experience than most. Other cashback solutions usually require you to shop via the app/website itself which will then take you off to the store. This is always a terrible shopping experience. Affordab.ly lets you install and forget. It'll just pop up and give you a nice surprise when you're shopping to let you know you can earn. Similar to how the honey extension operates. I think we're amongst the first to do this on iOS where apple only allowed this quite recently.
Hi! I really like the saying "Always deliver more than expected". So I would suggest to change the "up to 40% cashback" to the average amount of Cashback, or the amount that has been most often used by customers. And when the customer opens the extension there should be several views: Most popular, Highest Cashback..
This is really great advice. I was thinking maybe I'd have an "Average Cashback 5%" and "Maximum Cashback 40%" section. Best of both perhaps.
That would definitely be an improvement, because it cuts back the user expectations. Good luck!
Yep I hear ya - definitely having these extensions on multiple platforms is going to be a huge win.
Crypto is (from my perspective) probably quite dividing - people love it or hate it (or don't know how to use it).
Wishing you all the best!
Very dividing! And often those that do love it don't know how to use it either ๐ Grateful for the feedback!
The general design is very MVP.
Your landing page does explain the product and has a nice flow throughout the page.
If you are concerned about it being scammy, I would create a more personal landing page video.
Also, are the testimonials real?
Thanks for the feedback!
Yes the testimonials are real. We have some engaged early users so requested some quotes and asked to use snippets from various conversations we've had.
Ideally I'd like to supplement/replace them with "As seen on Forbes/BBC/TechCrunch etc" but we aren't there yet ๐
Really good advice about the more personal video. The video has been the latest addition and I wasn't even sure it was the right thing to do. I'm a software engineer so have very little experience in making them. I agree something more personal would help.
Iโm also a bit concerned about the testimonials since they donโt use real pictures.
Also I get some โscript kiddieโ wibes from the language used, donโt start a sentence with โฆ, donโt write (celebrate... yay!), use a more formal tone. I might be wrong but I think that it could feel less scammy.
I really like the examples + brand: buy form groupon with $60 and earn $3.5, one question, would it sound more reliable if you would use โget backโ instead of โearnโ?
Thanks for your feedback! I see, thats a fair point regarding the pictures. I'm not sure I'll be able to get pics ๐ค Do you think its better off with it as it is or removing the testimonials altogether?
I was trying to keep it light with the "celebrate... yay!" ๐ I'll remove it if there's even a small chance of suspicion.
Thanks for mentioning the examples. Originally it was just your typical slick screenshots of the app in a macbook & iphone. I think it's much better and more informative like this.
I'll have a think about changing to "get back" ๐ค I think I prefer it as "earned" but I will ask people. If people reading this would like to throw in their opinions then I'd be grateful!
I think you should keep the testimonials, maybe it would help to just remove the pictures, since they donโt seem authentic? Also these opinions are just a random guys on the internet, so definitely take them with a grain of salt.
Haha don't worry I know to take with a grain of salt. This has been a really useful exercise in making me think about things in a different way I hadn't considered before, testimonial pics included. Certainly if multiple people mention things then it adds weight. Thanks for your input!
What is your personality? I can write a landing page video script for you for free that helps convert more users.
I am just a good copywriter. I don't even sell writing services anymores.
If you are interested, you can reach me directly at: [email protected] or on Twitter.
That would be great Evan. So generous of you to offer! I'll send you an email :D
Honestly id say hire someone to make a more professional looking landing page. Not to say that this is horrible and Im no expert myself.. its just that you're asking for 100% honesty and I feel like the landing page can look much more up to date/sleek.

Amazing..... good Job๐๐๐๐
Hi @affordably,
The "supported countries" list lacks the stores available within each country. It does not make sense to sign up a user who cannot shop at your stores.
And it might be better to clarify if the purchase must be in crypto or can be with the usual methods.
Best regards
Yes I agree I could flesh the countries info out a bit. I hadn't considered that people might be confused that purchases have to be in crypto. I wouldn't want that. Will keep an eye to see if others think the same and act if they do. Thanks for the feedback!
Since i don't like crypto ( and potentially not your target audience), this website tells me in 10 seconds that i dont need it.
shusshing away your non target audience is also good design.
Looks like a peace of sh. sorry :)
DM if you want more real feedback
Hey Toby, congrats for getting the mvp out.
A couple of points:
Thanks for your feedback! This is really useful to hear from a web3 enthusiast which is the community I'd like to present this to next. This has been on my list of things to do. At the moment we store your crypto on the platform for you to export to your own wallet whenever you like. When this is presented more to a web3 specific audience (beyond just a general one like here) I'm interested to see if this request comes up more. If it does I'll have to prioritise it!
Hi Tody,
Just some quick feedback. Please note I am not a person who is not particularly interested in Crypto.
It looks like an interesting product, but I would ask the question why does the payment have to be in crypto?
It just makes it seem a bit fad like. The product would have a broader appeal if payment could be done in a number of ways and still draw in the crypto crowd.
Hey!
You're not wrong to wonder this. We could indeed have offered different earning options. Vouchers, cash etc. But the truth is that tools like this already exist and are much more established. Tools like Rakuten (ebates), topcashback, dosh have all been around for years (decades even) and have millions of members. While I stand by our technology, user experience and sheer amount/quality of offers, which I think is better than what many of them offer. I think we'd really struggle to stand out from the crowd.
If the product went down that road then I think there'd be more people commenting to say this is nothing new, how are you any better? Whatever your opinion of crypto may be, I think it adds an exciting differentiator and access to a new and motivated audience. I'm aware it won't be for everyone but I think there's a sizeable market there.
I say this of course at the very start of validating the product with little more than intuition to base this off. We may very well have to pivot later down the line. We could for example offer a mix of payment options with crypto being just one. I think we'd benefit from the product being single focussed for now though :)
Thanks for the detailed reply.
I can understand the niching and to be honest, I was not aware of the other tools on the market.
Just thinking in terms of venn diagrams, you have a large pool or people who want to save money when they make purchases (note, they are probably already using your competitor apps). Then you have a second pool of people who like crypto and want to use it as an investment vehicle. It sounds like you are looking for the intersection between those two groups.
It is worth saying that if someone was interested in investing in crypto, they could use one of your competitors and then just take the money saved and put it into crypto without the use of your app. This then boils down to a direct question around how much you charge to facilitate/automate this process. Sort of like those banking apps that round up your spending to the nearest pound and transfer it to a saving account.
So the goal of your app is to effectively automate that process and allow the user to passively build up their crypto portfolio whilst just going about their normal business?
If that is the case things start to make more sense to me. Therefore you should probably target users who are really into crypto as an investment first, don't currently use a savings app and are materialistic/big spenders.
In my opinion the headline 'Earn Crypto Cashback When You Shop.' is focusing on the wrong aspect. At least to me "Cashback" gives the impression that the goal is just to save money, where as I think your target users would be more interested in "passively build your crypto portfolio" whilst doing doing their regular shopping.
Just my (potentially uninformed) opinion !
I'm not yet making any assumptions about the second part of your venn diagram. You're right it could be people that are already passionate and experienced in crypto. But it could also be people that are curious but inexperienced in it and are looking for an easy, risk-free way to join the fun. Crypto platforms can be quite daunting financial looking tools to your average person and this could be an easier way in. I'd like to test both audiences and follow the stats.
You're quite right to say that it's about simplifying and automating that processs of investing your cashback in crypto. That audience you suggest targetting is one of several I'd lke to test for the reasons above.
Your last paragraph is certainly food for thought ๐ค Along with testing audiences I should also test the framing/messaging and I do see your point with "passively build your crypto portfolio". I'm sure that could resonate better with different people. I'll certainly think about that. Really grateful and helpful suggestion, thanks!
Nice.
No problem, glad to help !
I'm not really, a crypto guy, if I were, I would definitely try it. As for the word "free", people like free stuff, they'll have no problem trying it first and see if it works.
Thanks Zakaria, it's just about not crossing that red line into being untrustworthy which you have to consider with crypto projects. The feedback here has been generally positive though :)
For me, "free" and "crypto" don't set off "scam detectors." Things sounding too easy does. Your explainer video description sounds like you're basically paying people a percentage of affiliate commissions, which sounds legit to me (NOTE: I'm familiar with how affiliate schemes work).
I originally skipped over the "1 2 3" section, so I missed the description of how it actually works (a browser extension). Most likely, that section is all text and everything else is calling my attention. I watched the explainer video, hoping that it would show the app/browser-extension in action, but was disappointed. Maybe some screenshots in the "1 2 3" section would help, along with a "how it works" heading.
Other than that, the landing page looks good.
You're absolutely right regarding affiliate commissions. In fact currently we give the user 100% while the product is validated. I'd like to maximise the returns for them now and in future and may explore other revenue areas as the platform grows. Taking a slice from there is not the only option. We could offer a premium subscription with better offers or have certain stores pay for promotion for example.
That's really good advice on having screenshots of the app on the homepage. As I mentioned in another comment, there were previously screenshots in the hero instead of the cartoon products carousel. Your comment has made me realise I've neglected to put them anywhere else and it's lacking them. I agree with you fully.
Thanks a bunch for your feedback it was very valuable :)
You're welcome!
Just to be honest, I do not think crypto is mainstream.
Maybe is good for some countries, but it is not for the average user.
Very cool website.
I'm currently building an app to
generate fully customizable landing pages, which sets this solution apart from other solutions out there. If you're interested in trying it out.
I think that the design look very good, but look a little bit 'old'.
If we are talking about crypto, look at Solana website for example:
https://solana.com/
The solana website is directed at experienced/professional users. I was going for something more B2C. My inspiration was sites like joinpouch.com, klarna.com... joinhoney.com (and the honey app) helped with inspiration for sevaral other screens in the app but less so the homepage.
Hey there! Really cool landing page! I'm currently building an app to generate fully customizable landing pages, which sets this solution apart from other solutions out there. If you're interested in trying it out, please send me an email at [email protected] . I'd love to hear your thoughts and get your feedback on the app. Thanks!
