Hi all, I'm an indie developer currently launching FE only projects on GitHub pages and other products on Azure. Since there's so many options for hosting, what is the best for indie hackers. I'm scared to enter AWS or Digital Ocean right now.
For hosting static websites --- Amazon S3 + Cloudflare.
For applications --- Digital Ocean.
Don't be scared of DO, they just give you a linux server. As a developer you are able to learn; also knowing linux is an important skill for any developer. Also there is no overhead, I'm not sure what others are talking about, you can't beat $5/mo.
If you're looking to host only frontend applications, I would highly suggest Netlify. Pretty much every one of my frontend (non-dashboard) apps are hosted there. They have integrations with everything imaginable and the process is smooth from start to finish. I couldn't recommend the platform more. The other nice thing is the majority of uses will fall under their generous free tier (which also includes custom domains).
I have tried Digital Ocean, AWS and Heroku. Heroku is a no brainer if you are just starting out. The setup time is as low as it can get if you use a standard stack and the management overhead is non-existent.
Their base Hobby plan is enough to handle a handful of simultaneous users and you can scale up quickly if needed. I would stay away from DO & AWS as they have a large management overhead and are only economical if you have a large paying user base.
Render[1] is the new kid on the block and looks quite promising. But I have not had experience with it yet. Would love to know if anyone else has experience with Render.

(Render CEO) you're reading this on a server hosted on Render!
Haha, that's awesome! I did not know that IndieHackers is hosted on Render. This should probably be known a lot more. I will be trying out Render soon for one of my side projects. :)
Looking forward to it.
There are many different hosting providers that offer different services for cloud storage and rental of server equipment. I know many developers who have different criteria for choosing a company and/or hosting service. The most important thing that my friends advised me to pay attention to is how long this or that company has been working and the characteristics of the equipment that the company uses and how heavily the servers are loaded with data from other users. Server overload can cause " long wait time for a response from the server" error, so you will not be able to access your data until the company fixes this issue. Sometimes it may take several days for free services. Because of this that I didn't take advantage of any of the free offers from hosting providers. In addition, I see no reason to take risks and save money (given the cost of a professional and high-quality managed cloud hosting service that you can get here https://www.hostforweb.com/cloud/managed_cloud/ ). Another problem with new providers is that they tend to go missing and you lose all your information. Therefore, a good reputation for a provider of such services is a real necessity. So I wish you the best of luck in your search for a hosting provider with all these tips in mind!

Is another cool kid in the town!
Hi John, we created Microtica specifically for developers like yourself, who are scared to start with AWS because it can be overwhelming. We have ready-to-use templates of AWS infrastructure that you can setup in minutes without having AWS expertise. We're preparing to launch an even simpler version of our portal where you can deploy the templates. Here is the teaser https://microtica.com/version2. I'd love to see you in the beta release!
