How a Kenyan Entrepreneur Built His Marketplace Without a Developer

A few months ago, I met a small business owner from Kenya who wanted to create a local version of OLX — a place where people in his town could buy and sell things easily.

He did what most people do first — reached out to developers.
Every quote he got was out of reach. Custom design, database setup, admin panel, hosting… all added up to something way beyond his budget.

He told me, “Maybe this kind of idea is only for big startups.”

That hit me hard because I’ve heard it so many times from entrepreneurs in Kenya and other parts of Africa.

A few weeks later, he messaged me again.
This time, with good news. He found a ready-made classified script(ours) and launched his marketplace without hiring a single developer.
No coding, no tech team — just a smart use of an existing solution.

He was live in days, not months.

What I took away from that

Too many entrepreneurs think “starting” means “building from scratch.”
But sometimes, the smartest move is to start lean — test your idea first, before spending heavily on development.

You can validate your idea, build traction, and then invest later when you know it’s worth it.

That small business owner reminded me that execution > perfection.
