How a Lazy Bitch Like Me Learned to be Productive

I recently got my life together and wanted to share what's been working for me😊 https://www.madisontaskett.com/lazy-bastard-productivity/

"A couple of months ago, I was a train wreck that ate too many cinnamon rolls and watched Netflix while laying in sweats on the couch. Yesterday, I ran 3 miles, did 40 minutes of yoga, meditated, ate steel cut oats with berries for breakfast, then turned on my favorite business podcast while I showered, all before work started."

You can start a podcast called "Productive Lazy Bitch". Probably go wild. LOL

but I also do it every single day, no matter how I feel.

I like this. This is similar to my personal rule for running: "Just make sure you step out of the front door". Then everything else follows. Need to walk during you run? No problem. Just don't decide today isn't the day to step out of the door.

Every time I go into the garden with my kids I do push ups whilst my kids are playing.

I've 4x'd how many I can do in one go in the past month, and I do them about 5 times a day atm πŸ’ͺ

I've also started walking or playing tag with them where possible. It all adds up!

It does all add up! Thanks for sharing Rosie. <3

I laughed out loud when I read your quote. Thanks for the laugh. Have you heard of Tiny Habits from BJ Fogg? It's a nice concept which may be helpful. I'm also making a product called Llama which is a timed task manager - if you have a moment I'd love your feedback on it. It's free at the moment, but hoping to make it into a paid service later https://llamalife.co/

I came here after reading to namedrop Tiny Habits too. I'm a couple weeks into using the system, and it's been great. Glad others are reading it!

yep! It makes so much sense to tie a new habit to an existing behavior. It's worked pretty well for me.

I love the app! Awesome design btw. :) Currently I'm using TickTick's focus mode for the same with shorter pomo settings since I prefer 5/10m tasks to maintain the momentum. It would be a great featuree if llamalife could be accessible from osx menu bar.

thanks tamas! you made my day. Hm, you're the second person who's said osx menu bar access would be useful πŸ€”. Will consider!

Great insights - I went through a similar journey a few years ago. It's amazing when things that felt like chores before become the things you look forward to :)

Nice article – fun and informative!

One thing I would add is that learning to enjoy the habits you are trying to form is very helpful.

Personally, I've come to really enjoy running, yoga, meditation, oatmeal and berries – and in some ways, I like these things even more than Netflix and cinnamon rolls. For example, when I don't run, I feel really lethargic and almost depressed, but running makes me feel energized (I usually do it in the afternoon after working). Yoga makes me feel calm, focused and almost like I just received a massage (I usually do 15 minutes not 40). Quality oatmeal like Bob's Red Mill Oatmeal actually tastes fantastic (not that Quaker Oats garbage).

I've also come to learn that while I enjoy eating cinnamon rolls, the aftermath is usually food-coma, sugar-crash and regret.

    Just my 2 cents.

This is so true! I hadn't even thought of that, but you're right!

Good read. This reminds me of the deliberate practice theory. By doing something very specific consistently, you eventually become an expert in the field.

    1. 1

      Yes! It's definitely related. :)

When I read the line about only having a finite amount of time for hard work, it reminded me of Deep Work / Indistractible, but you went a whole other route. I like it.

It was nice and inspiring need, I kind of spiralled downwards when the lockdown started. Guess some support from my girlfriend some easy catch on diet is making me better.
Glad to know that you are making an effort too.

    1. 1

thanks- it's easy to spiral downward during these crazy times; I hope you're doing better now!

      1. 2

I most definitely am! hope to see some more of your good work

Loved this article @taskett. It can be very overwhelming trying to get up to speed and cram too many new habits into our lives with the aim of being "productive". Unless we gradually build them up though, they are unlikely to be sustainable in the long run. Small improvements each day build up over time. You hit the nail on the head.

    1. 2

I'd say YOU hit the nail on the head with your summary!
      Thanks Gordon.

Haha thanks @taskett. I needed to see your post for the daily reminder though. ;)

Wow, this seems to be the solution to my problem πŸ€” -> What's wrong with my schedule?

Thank you, I'm glad you have improved
