A few months ago, I was dealing with a frustrating problem.
Every month I'd spend way too much time cleaning up invoice data and converting CSV files into formats my accounting workflow could actually use. It wasn't difficult work—it was just repetitive and annoying.
Instead of continuing to do it manually, I spent a weekend coding a simple CSV conversion tool.
No market research.
No startup idea.
No grand vision.
Just a tool to solve my own problem.
After using it for a while, I mentioned it to a few freelancer friends. They had the exact same issue and asked if they could use it too.
That was the first signal.
I polished the interface, added a few extra export options, and put it online.
Then something interesting happened.
People started sharing it.
Freelancers, consultants, virtual assistants, bookkeepers, and small business owners were all looking for ways to automate tedious spreadsheet work.
Today, that tiny side project generates around $750 in Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR).
It's not life-changing money, but it's proof of something I've learned repeatedly:
The most profitable ideas are often the least exciting.
While everyone is chasing the next AI unicorn, there are thousands of small workflow problems that businesses deal with every day.
If you can save someone even 15–30 minutes per week, many will happily pay for it.
A few lessons from this journey:
Build solutions for real problems you personally experience.
Don't underestimate "boring" software.
Launch before everything feels perfect.
Talk to users constantly and iterate quickly.
Revenue is often hidden inside repetitive manual tasks.
The product is still bootstrapped.
I'm still improving features based on user feedback.
And I'm constantly surprised by how much demand exists for simple automation.
If you're working on a side project, consider looking at the repetitive tasks you do every week.
The next profitable SaaS idea might be hiding in a spreadsheet you've been complaining about for months.
What's the most tedious workflow you've automated recently?
