How a simple survey doubled my revenue

Having run a non-tech side hustle for three years now, there was one low-effort defining moment that helped me progress. A simple survey.

Context: We're talking a low revenue side project here (Rev = $2500/yr) but a survey has been attributable to growth.

My product was priced at $50 ( 2.5x cost of product) and sales would trickle in, one every couple of months. I struggled to understand why so I decided to survey my email database and leverage my social following.

You can find the, very old and not thought out too well, survey here: https://forms.gle/58q1mkGNbF86qaFp6

Key Learnings:

  1. People would expect to pay half the amount I was charging
  2. My product had a single colour variant which wasn't enough
  3. There was appetite to expand my product line in a specific areas like mugs and tshirts.

I dropped my price by 50% after this and sales accelerated at the end of 2019 and throughout 2020. I also turned off free shipping which didn't seem to deter customers. New colour variants were added (after surveying to find favourites) and now equate for 30% of the product sales.

So, to summarise! Always speak to your audience and be transparent with what you're trying to learn.

Get in touch if you would like any feedback or to discuss a way to get insights from your audience, always happy to help :)
