How about a "VPN" service?

I have been working a "VPN" side project for a few years. The "VPN" service is especially for getting around GFW of China. In order to avoid adverse action from CCP, I have to stay anonymous in many aspects.

So far, the website has nearly a thousand signed up users. However, lots of users just take the service as freebies. There are a very few paid users, but they cannot cover my business cost at all. I have to spend some money every month to keep the business online. I am not very sure where should let this side project go now.

Here are some of the options I can think of:

  1. Look for partners to enhance the current one
  2. Open the source code to make it a open source project
  3. Upgrade the business mode to be a platform based (instead of selling stuff online, creating a platform like ebay)
  4. Give up, withdraw

The website is oklnk.com

If you're thinking of killing the service altogether, you should try a risky strategy to keep it going: remove the free tier and offer a discount to your existing users for a finite period of time. Just tell your users the truth, and offer them a discount. Explain that you really appreciate the reader for subscribing to the service. But the service is losing money, and you don't have the money to afford keeping it running. If nothing changes, you would need to shut it down, but you don't want to do that. So you're getting rid of your free tier within 30 days. But you're grateful that they've been using the service, so you want to offer them a one-time deal of half-off for 3 months.

    Best of luck.
