How adopting a novice mindset can help you succeed?

In the book, ‘Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind’, Zen monk Shunryu Suzuki says, “In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s, there are few.”

How many times have we said to ourselves, “I already know a lot about this topic. I don’t need to read more,” or “He doesn’t know about this topic. His views are wrong.”

The thing is the more we read and learn about a subject, the more we start considering ourselves as experts in it. This leads us to overestimate our level of understanding and makes us less willing to accept contradicting viewpoints.

To counteract this, adopt the novice mindset. Here’s how:

  • We might think we know about a topic. But do we really? Try to explain a topic to someone you know. You’ll get a more realistic sense of what you know and don’t know.
  • Understand that expertise isn’t about reaching a level. It’s about constantly learning. This triggers the growth mindset.
  • Instead of seeking out information that is consistent with your beliefs (confirmation bias), remind yourself every now and then that you need to look for information that challenges your beliefs in order to grow.

Do you think adopting a novice mindset works?

    Great reminder. Suffering from this.

Before I start a project, I know exactly all the points I have to face. Authentication, authorization, invitations, mails, testing, deployments, configuration. Web-app, landing pages, etc.

It really makes it hard to feel excited when I'm already overwhelmed with the known chores I'm about to face.
