Let’s be real—the Chrome Web Store discovery system is brutal for indie builders. If you aren't paying for heavy ads or gaming search terms from day one, your tool gets buried instantly.
I got tired of watching great extensions die on page 20, so I built an alternative directory called TopExtension.lol.
It’s a pure pay-to-rank leaderboard. You submit your CWS link, outbid the current listing starting at $1, and take the top spot. Zero algorithmic bias, just direct cash-for-visibility.
For those of you who have built extensions: how are you currently driving traffic? Would you ever use a direct bidding model over traditional SEO? Let's talk numbers. 👉 https://www.topextension.lol/
Not a Chrome extension builder, but for organic growth I've had the
most luck combining a Product Hunt launch with build-in-public posts
on X/LinkedIn — the honest "here's what broke while I built this"
angle gets way more engagement than a clean feature list. Curious if
that translates to extensions too, since discovery there is so
CWS-dependent.
Spot on. The "here’s what broke" angle is doing way more heavy lifting for TopExtension right now than any clean feature list ever could. People are exhausted by polished launch theater.
Testing that exact theory right now—sharing the messy parts of building a raw pay-to-win leaderboard in public. Appreciate you highlighting the PH angle too; definitely taking notes. How has your experience been with PH traffic translating into actual long-term users versus just a one-day spike?
Honestly still finding out — I'm 10 hours into my own PH launch right now with basically zero traction so far, so I can't speak to the long-term numbers yet. From what I've read though, the general pattern seems to be that PH gives a short traffic spike but rarely turns into lasting users unless you're already building an audience elsewhere (X/LinkedIn/newsletter) that sticks around after the spike fades. Will report back once I have real data instead of theory.
Before directories or bidding for rank, I'd hand-recruit the first 10 people who already complain about the exact manual step your extension removes. Search X/Reddit for that complaint, reply with the workflow (not an install link), and only send the CWS URL if they ask how you do it.
Write the store listing in their words from those threads. That copy converts cold CWS traffic later; a leaderboard slot without that language just rents impressions that bounce.
Really appreciate this — especially the point about leaderboard slots just renting impressions if the listing copy isn't there yet. That's fair, and honestly something I should be upfront about: TopExtension gets people seen, it doesn't replace the work of writing a listing in the words your actual users already use to complain about the problem.
Going to try the "reply with the workflow, not the link" approach directly — makes sense that it builds real trust before someone even sees a CWS URL. Appreciate you taking the time to write this out.
