How are you growing your community? ๐
by
Ed
How do you attract new members to your community? How do you make sure they stay?
For anyone looking to grow their community, if you'd like to list it on Hive Index, an online community discovery platform, send me a note! Happy to help you grow your community.
Hive index is SICK!
Cool! Is the Hive Index your project?
Yup!
Well done, looks really great. Reminds me of top lists for private gaming servers, just without the voting element and stats.
I think it would actually be really cool to rank these somehow, not just based on members but based on traffic and member votes (if there was a voting system). Would give a better indicator of the quality and activity of the community.
A side-effect would be people cross-pollinating between communities.
Thank you so much! Absolutely, the site is a very fresh project, but I have some product goals that are really lined up with what you mentioned.
I'm planning on building out a user review section, so that existing members of those communities can speak a bit to the quality and characteristics of the community.
As for stats, I'd like to include them for the communities on platforms that have a public API, like Reddit does.
Sounds fantastic! Best of luck with it!
Hi, can you list online brand communities? communities like Lego Ideas, Sephora, etc
Yes! I haven't curated any brand communities yet, but definitely open to having them on the site.
@thefedoration That's awesome that you made a discovery platform. Would you be able to add my site to it as well? It's a Catholic dating site, https://www.catholicluv.com
These have been the best for me:
These are some great points. Thanks for sharing!
newsletter. all day, every day.
Subscribed! Well marketed ๐
lol. :P
So far, our growth has mostly come from referrals from other members as well as some from direct applications on our website.
Publishing content (Twitter, LinkedIn, Medium) seems to work well and gives us more credibility.
We've also started experimenting with direct outreach to potential members (mostly through LinkedIn).
We have some other things in the works - happy to chat further if you want to reach out!
I'm curious how much success you've had with direct outreach via LinkedIn? I know personally I'd be very skeptical if I've received a message on LinkedIn promoting a community.
Experimenting with LinkedIn -- getting eyes on content is easy there, though genuine conversation and engagement is challenging.
I keep seeing more and more people talking about marketing on LinkedIn. Feels very odd to me, maybe because it's your own personal space and it holds you more accountable than just buying ads for example.
Ya I think LinkedIn's constraints can also be its strengths. If selling yourself is important to selling to your market, and what you're selling is higher-ticket (like consulting, productized consulting), I think it's hard to beat.
Though I follow a few people who've built successful Saas businesses there by making their own story part of their companies branding.
Right now it's invite only; we're taking the approach to grow slowly and maintain the "high quality"-ness of the community. We'll soon be letting people apply to be in the community, but it will be very selective.
What do you mean by invite only? Only people who are members can invite others? What's your community about?
Yep exactly! I suppose that's also the "referral" approach now that I think about it.
It's a community for location independent workers and digital nomads (however people want to define themselves).
Oh nice. A more closed community makes it feel exclusive and I think depending on what goes on in the community, you're naturally developing a network of trust. Really interesting take!
Yeah exactly, the latter is what we're aiming to achieve. We'd like to be open about who we are without fear of downfalls from doing so (e.g., we're open about who we work for and what we do). But obviously that's not very scalable so we're trying to figure out how to maintain that level of trust but get some people we don't know into the community.
Really curious to see where this goes!
