Hey Y'all,
I have a Substack in the architecture/lifestyle niche called Life of a Designer and I'm looking to grow but there isn't much of an audience for me on Twitter like there is for others.
I typically break down my posts and post on Reddit, FB, and Twitter. Not sure how to promote text through a visual platform like Instagram yet..
Has anyone found growth through any other social media platform?
The key, imho, is just to focus in and keep writing and not worry about the audience. The habit is more important. Then combine this hanging out and gaining trust with where your people hang out.
I started a newsletter a year ago, then switched over to Substack early this year because it was easy and free. I had no intention of doing a paid subscription, but I just went for it a couple of months ago.
My email list growth has been super slow. First 3 months I barely scraped 100. Now I'm at over 800, the growth is happening without me trying. A few people subscribe every day without me trying.
TBH, I think the best thing is just being open and documenting the journey.
I just passed 50 paid subscribers today.
Congrats. This is really inspiring. Consistency and focus on your writing do make a difference.
Congrats on the milestone @rosiesherry. A year long newsletter with 50 paid subscribers is actually an impressive metric.
Thanks Rosie, Congrats on the 50 paid subscribers! I agree, like someone else said above, I think documenting my journey is something I'll definitely have to include. That's what got me growth on my Youtube channel, I just didn't think of it for a newsletter.
Have you ever ran into trouble posting or "promoting" your newsletter in groups where your people hang out?
No problems with promoting in groups I hang out in.
When you participate in communities you know what the boundaries are.
There are a couple of 'community' Slacks that I make a point of visiting once a week and answering anything that I can.
They also have channels that are made for sharing your links/things/etc, so I drop my link in there occasionally, probably about once per month.
To turn text to visuals I'd suggest this free course: How to Visualise an Idea for Twitter
Hi Joseph, I launched mine a few months ago, writing about my past B2B company.
I'm not regularly posting. It's been a few weeks without me creating a new issue by the way.
As I'm not active with my newsletter, the growth is slow. I have 117 subscribers atm, mainly through IH and my Twitter.
What I did to reach those people? I'm telling a behind the scenes of what happened with the company. How I built the product. Sales process. Etc....
Hey Leo,
I like the "behind the scenes" thought process. Maybe that's something I can start sharing when it comes to my work. I appreciate it!
Hi Joseph
there are 3 key things for you to think about:
Ultimately the better the content, the more audiences it get and more subscribers.
Thanks for the feedback! I didn't know about designernews so I'll try and leverage that!
Might be an idea to find where your target audience hangs out, and go there.
For example, if it is on Facebook. I would update my profile, with my link to my newsletter, just below your name. And post helpful advice on those pages and groups, if people want to find out more about you, they will click on your name and see you have a newsletter.
