How are you using your personal website?

I recently just set up my own website, https://kanglelin.com. I posted my blog and a course that I am about to launch there. It looks really nice.

I know some ppl use it to personal brand themselves, some ppl just try to post blogs on it. I am curious to see your personal website. And I am curious what is your purpose setting up the site.

If you can leave ur link in the comment, I will sure look over it, and let's talk about it!

      wow nice,

there are quite a few books on there! r u doing it for ur business?
      or personal branding?

      1. 1

        thanks. It's just my interest.

Mine is basically just a portfolio reference for potential freelance clients: maximzubarev.com

i like it, very simple. Very nice and direct. did u build it urself?

      1. 1

Thank you, yes I did :)

I registered the domain (hakanaktas.com.tr) years ago to blog on it. Had 2 failed attempts, and got fair bit of content on the third attempt. Unfortunately the servers crashed in 2012 or 2013 and I lost all my content. Never tried again since then. Now it's just an index page to link to my social profiles.

    1. 1

what server crush? damn that's mess up man. why dont u try something like ghost? They r reliable right?

      1. 1

It was a small shared hosting package and it was managed by a coworker. He effed up and I did not have the energy to start over since then.

        1. 1

          man sorry to hear that...

I use my personal website, Thevediwho.me, to just write about lifestyle, technology and psychology.

You have a great website, btw :)

I love ur website man, its so cool. How does it help ur professional life?

Btw i followed u on twitter!

      1. 1

Thank you for that. I followed you back. I think it can help me to present my thoughts.

        1. 2

that's great! I need to do that as well. organize my thoughts as well

I use mine to teach people about coding!

On https://healeycodes.com I write about what I'm learning and how I'm learning it. I throw in some personal stuff too.

A few of my posts have gone moderately viral which has helped increase my readership and email list. I hope to write books and create courses in the future.

I'm grateful that my website has connected me to more learners! I mentor people who are learning to code and it's incredibly rewarding to listen to their wins.

    1. 2

wow man I love ur comment here man!

Do you have any tip to share on going viral with one of the posts? viral on other platform or the traffics r all on ur website?

      1. 1

When one of my posts does well all of the traffic is on my website. For example, hitting #3 on hackernews increased my traffic by 20k users overnight with a gradual drop-off after that.

Do you have any tip to share on going viral with one of the posts?

Write and publish a lot so there's more chance of something connecting with people. Be authentic. I'm trying to teach people how to code because that's my passion so when I'm doing light marketing I'm thinking: where can I reach learners and what do they need to know right now.

        1. 2

wow that's crazy good. I hope one day I can make it to hacker news.

Thank you for sharing this man! its very good

    I'm also running a blog, it's on brunoraljic.com

I write about things that may help or encourage others on a way to build their own product. Started recently. Setup a newsletter which is kind of mirror of the blog posts + some personal motivation why I wrote that

    1. 1

wow I checked it, I think ur content is juicy man. I mma read them for sure.

How does the blog help u as a professional?

      1. 1

Feel free to subscribe or forward it to others who could like it.

At the moment the blog doesn't have a big impact. I'm a full time developer, and these things I'm writing in my spare time for others. But it helps me in terms of improving my writing skills, exploration (SEO, content marketing etc), building some community, so I think on the long run it will pay off

        1. 1

how are you building community on your blogs right now? what does it look like? are there interactions?

          1. 1

up to 10 active subscribers, not much. no strategy for building a community at the moment. Trying to engage via tw, collecting either followers or subscribers

            1. 1

I see, coz a lot of the blogger i talked to they are building an interactive community for their topic. and even offering classes and stuff

              1. 1

I would probably approach it differently if it was my main obsession. currently it's a "side effect" of what I'm doing.

                1. 1

Lol feel you. Same here. I don’t wanna switch it to main gig.

    awesome site there.
I set up my site to help document my journey in software development a year ago when I felt that I wasn't getting much growth in campus.
One year later it's enabled me to push myself and provide value to a lot of members in the software community and that gives me joy. Here it is: https://lewiskori.com/

oh shit, urs is so much cooler man hhahhha.. Urs is a real spaceship!
make sure u fix the avater man. some bug there.

dude i think u just set a good example for me man. love it!

did u make those projects for others or u founded them?

      1. 1

Haha, thanks for the cheers. I made them for others. I wish I could showcase more, but oh well NDAs are a bummer.

There's so much I've been able to achieve through pushing myself to teach others and I owe it to that site.

in case you're curious on how I made it you can read through this: https://lewiskori.com/blog/building-my-new-site-with-gridsome-vue-js/

        1. 1

I love ur stuff here man! How do u think writing blog benefits u tho?

          1. 1

well, for starters I get to interact to members of the dev community that I otherwise wouldn't have known if I didn't write.

I mentioned that I started this in college last year. So through it I was able to get a job even before I finished school without much of an interview as it already highlighted my skills and passion for what I do.

other minute details are improving my communication skills and generally, I think you have to push yourself to know something well before teaching isn't it?

            1. 1

Yes exactly! we have to know how to organize our thoughts most importantly.

How are u interacting with the dev community with ur blogs

              1. 1

For the time being I just reply to comments. Some people do email and I try to get back to them whenever I can.

Saw you have a product geared towards community btw :)

                1. 1

yeah! Pubb.at is a community-building platform, we have real time chat + forum discussion feature. We are trying to help future/ early-stage community builders to easily build up their community by offering what slack or other apps are lacking.

I am also teaching a course on Community building, but this coming cohort is full.
but here is the link. https://kanglelin.com/pubbbuilderproject/

I was kinda feeling bad coz today a lot of people wanted to join, but I had to tell them to stay tune for the next cohort.

                  1. 1

                    That's super awesome.

sorry about your bad day. Just seen you take a cohort of 3 at any one time. Just followed you on twitter. This thread is becoming loong lol. Let's continue the conversation over there if you don't mind.

                    1. 1

for sure man, just followed back and DMed
