I'm sure you are all very busy people, and busy people have notoriously bad eating habits! Do you struggle to eat healthy? Eating out too much? Do you meal plan? Do you feel that your diet is healthy enough?
Any tips for other indie hackers?
It’s something I’ve become really passionate about.
Please don’t follow all the bullshit new diets that pop up every day.

I try to meal plan every week. It helps that the app I'm working on (AvoToast) is for creating and following meal plans. I used to be 50lbs heavier, so I know what happens if I don't plan and just eat whatever.
My secret weapon is the Instant Pot. It's so easy to cook a lot of fairly healthy meals with little effort. I also try to meal prep on Sundays, both lunches for the week and sometimes pre-prep dinners. I love meals that you can toss in a big bag, toss in the fridge/freezer, and pull out and dump straight into the Instant Pot when I get home. I also have a few recipes (like mini meat loafs) where I can prep them Sunday, toss them in the fridge/freezer, and go straight to the oven each night. I'm lazy as heck, so I try to find ways to make my lazy choices healthy.
Congratulations! 50lbs is a big accomplishment.
Post your recipe for mini meatloaves! :-)
Thank you! It was a struggle and is still a struggle every day!
I modify this recipe, usually tossing in some breadcrumbs and BBQ sauce. Super simple, but very tasty! https://www.4hourbodyrecipes.com/4-hour-body-recipes/4-hour-body-dinner-recipes/turkey-bacon-meatloaf/
Can't wait to try it, thanks for sending that down!
I've been following the Paleo diet for about 7 months. It helps me feel much more focused, my sleep time improved, and of course I lost some weight. I highly recommend this diet!
I've recently moved to the US from Canada to help launch a US office. It is impossible to eat healthy down here. Canada has a much better selection for inexpensive and healthy food.
I'm surprised to hear that! I would have assumed that the US has cheaper food than in Canada. Do you mind saying what area of the US you're living in?
Charlotte, NC. Originally in Toronto, Canada which may be why - lots of options.
That's really interesting, I never would have guessed. I'm sorry to hear that it's a struggle.
I try to plan my week. I don't make a calendar but I try to do all the shopping for the week in one day and manage that.
With this I can always have "healthy things" at home not causing me to fall into the temptation of fast food.
Good idea! Planning is key.
I've been planning for meal prep with a spreadsheet and looking at the flyer for the week on Reebee. By price-checking from the flyers of a few grocery stores at a time I've saved a ton of money.
It also only takes about 10 minutes once every time that you go for groceries. I try to do a run once every 2 weeks.
While I eat healthy meals with solid nutritional profiles, I'll often forget a meal or two if I'm engrossed in solving a problem. So in that sense, I guess I intermittently fast, too!
You're a natural!
I've been doing Intermittent Fasting (a.k.a. IF) for 6 years. I will never go back. I fast for 18 hours and then eat within those 6 hours. It will completely change your body composition and give you so much more energy in the morning.
I also combine it with IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros). Based upon whether I am trying to lose fat, gain muscle, or maintain, I calculate how much protein and fat I need for the day, and eat the rest of the calories in carbs.
I get to eat what I want (but I choose to eat healthy foods) and not have to count calories.
It's fantastic.
I'm not really planning my meals or following a diet ... but we always buy "in-time" or for at least two days. We also cook meals for more than two servings so that we can bring it to the office next day.
Goal: Keeping it simple, and healthy.
I don't eat after 9pm. My first meal is at noon or thereabout. I make a 1/3-lb hamburger patty (80/20) and eat it plain or with a slice of cheese. Later in the afternoon I make a modest-sized shake with Huel (a no-soy soylent), whole milk (sometimes cream) and a banana. For dinner I eat whatever, no real restrictions but I try to stay away from fried foods. Overall it's working for me. My energy, focus, concentration are definitely better than when I was eating a grain-based breakfast.
Grain is pain
I moved away a few months ago and have started meal prepping on Sunday night with enough food for the week. A batch of sandwiches, curry, and rice. I eat the same 2 meals every day for 7 days. Always delicious, haven't gotten sick of anything yet. The best part is that my food costs are typically under $3CAD a day.
I also started intermittent fasting, and have found it has helped my mental clarity during the day. I have lost over 20lbs in the past 2 months from it as well, and feel better than I have in years.
