How can I network better?

I am very social. I know how to conduct myself professionally.

However when networking, what should the goal be? How should I act? Do I promote myself? Promote My project? Do I look for emails and numbers? Do I just go to enjoy myself and see what happens? What do I bring?. Networking for a cause is not something I have experience with.

What are your do's and don'ts?

    It depends on the type of event, but generally I:

    • only go to events that match who I am
    • I don't do business cards
    • I try to get conversations going about them, rather than me, this helps me understand them better
    • then I can figure out what parts of me would be interesting to them
    • sometimes I'll try to keep in contact, typically I'm not good at this, by following or connecting with them on Twitter/LinkedIn/Email/etc.
