Come to think about it, these two have a fairly good audience and reach and engagement.
Which one do you consume more often?
How come snacks and big meals work in the same era? Different moments, different needs :-)
Also, tik tok = video, podcast = audio. They are consumed in a different way.
I spend more time listening to podcasts but consume short videos more often, specially from Youtube. Tiktok not so much, although I've sometimes opened the app and haven't been able to close it for a whole hour!
The younger the user base, the shorter their attention span. I don't know a lot of Gen Z that listen to podcasts and I don't know many parents/grandparents on Tik Tok
I would argue that they are both a reaction to the other.
I personally consume long form content. I love to listen while I work.
Different target/demography of audience.
• Former get their value from short form videos and latter get their value from long form audio.
• Former is mainly entertainment and latter is mainly informational.
• Former is a recent format for medium catapulted by improvements to phone camera, image processing, cellular data and access to it across populations which has never used a computer before. Latter has been in existence for ~ two decades.
Never used TikTok due to its initial criticisms, recent criticisms reaffirmed my stance on it. As a disabled person myself, I will not use a platform which promotes inequality as a policy.
That said, I follow analysis on TikTok closely due to my work. I listen to podcasts daily - Mostly on startups, behavioural and general science.
Different value offered. Different solution.
It's different products and the peak of their audiences age distribuion may be slightly differrent.
1-hour podcasts are the exception, except the Joe Rogan podcast, most limit themselves at around 15 minutes, which is already not too different from the few minute tiktok thing.
Podcasts, too boomer for the other 🧐
