How did you approach your first customer(s)?

Hi, I built a proof-of-concept for a product that I believe in.
I have a first customer in mind, a "cold-lead", and I'm looking for tips on how to approach in a way that will convey that: I have a new business, I am serious, I am looking for a first batch of customers to test the product.
How did you approach your first customers? What things are a MUST in your opinion?

    Hi ehudt,

To be successful, I think you should reframe your goals.

I have a first customer in mind, a "cold-lead", and I'm looking for tips on how to approach in a way that will convey that: I have a new business, I am serious, I am looking for a first batch of customers to test the product.

You're thinking about yourself, your product, and what you want to get out of the relationship.

If you want to make your first sales (and build a successful business more generally), it can help to start thinking about your customer, their goals, and their objections instead.

I talk a lot about how to do this in my Sales for Founders course.

Alternatively, a cheap, really useful resource you can use to overcome exactly this stage of sales is the Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick. I strongly recommend it (and actually include it as free required reading in my S4F course).

    Good luck!

Was nodding my head in agreement the whole way through. Great answer, and makes sense that it was you.

Thanks a lot for your answer! Wow!
BTW, the link to the book is broken (needs to be http instead of https)

Can you describe your ideal customer? Is it a business or individual?

I think this article is a great summary that shows that you need to validate both the product and the channel through which you will acquire customers.

Do you have an initial guess as to how you want to acquire customers? SEO, Social, Cold calling?

Thanks for taking the time to respond :)
My ideal customers are small-medium businesses.
Cold calling is how I want to acquire customers.
      AND thanks for the article!

Got it. Then I would say try to build your first list of potential customers as you would a year from now and go from there.
