How did you find your first developers and how much did you pay them?

I'm currently in the process of hiring the first fulltime developer and I'm struggling finding good candidates. I'm a developer myself, maybe that makes me more skeptical. Additionally I'm also a bit restrained by my budget. Most companies on Angellist pay far more than what I can offer. I'm curious to hear your experiences. How did you find your first full-time developers and how did you define the salary?
