How do companies with remote workers deal with multiple state laws?

I'm curious to know how companies with more than a few remote workers in multiple states understand/track/comply with the various state laws for things like:

  • Taxes
  • Intellectual property laws
  • Health benefit laws/requirements
  • Employee rights (e.g. unused PTO carryover/payout)

Generally, your lawyer would handle this. If you want to DIY it, I'd suggest you simplify it by determining which state has the most stringent requirements for each category and then apply those across the board. Also, make sure you keep informed on any changes to the law.

A friend of mine works for a "Canadian legal entity" for a US company. Its essentially a co-working space that handles all aspects of your foreign business. So you choose who to hire, they hire the employee, you pay them as a business and they pay the individual employees. I think they keep it quiet and don't market as they want to work with larger established companies rather than becoming a "PO box for any foreign entity".
