I am starting a clothes alteration business which can be booked online (www.alterit.io). We are working with a number of top class tailors across the country but I'm finding it hard to get it off the ground.
Everyone I speak to seems to think it's a fantastic idea but I'm failing to see that manifest with orders.
Would love to get advice on this! :)
Thanks!
You need to spend money in ads and direct outreach into communities of your niche.
There're definitely words that people use that you can target and there are definitely weird groups for people who like to talk fashion/alteration (ie. first one to come to mind is Cosplayers)
Hunt them down and sell them your product.
One more thing: I've spent my whole life with clothes and never needed alteration - maybe you're after a very small group of people that don't live in the "order it, wear it or return it" paradigm world.
It's a very good point to target people who are a-lot more niche than my initial scope for customers.
My current understanding is that people with more money to spend are willing to have this service done for them. This is ultimately a premium product that I was initially trying to bring to the mass market.
I may have to simply nail the luxury audience.
I have only had my clothes altered once, and that was at the clothing store (Moore’s). Have you considered partnering with smaller clothing retailers who can’t currently do in-house alterations?
Yes, it's already on the radar to do it. We're currently building the team around us to make these in-store alterations happen.
Due to the unpredictability of orders it's challenging to assign dedicated resource but I guess it will become clearer with time!
I know this is a bit late but saw this and was intrigued.
I think the problem is the market you are targeting, instead of looking for Luxury audience as I believe they would spend extra and get a tailor whereas you may be better looking at business professionals who have recently completed a weight loss program (such as Weight Watchers) as they may be more willing to spend a percentage of an outfit cost to have it altered rather than buying a new one.
For example, if I have 3 suits that are £300 each I would rather spend £150 to have all 3 altered than spending £900 buying 3 new suits.
That makes complete sense. Thanks very much for the input! :)
