How do I get more newsletter subscriptions on my site?

Hi, I'm the author of This Week In React, a newsletter with 17k subscribers.

First, you should put a subscription form on your articles so that this is visible everywhere. Many readers will come to your site and only browse a single article, so make it easy to subscribe from anywhere with a clear reason to subscribe.

Second, your articles are how-to tutorials on very specific problems. These things work best with SEO: people search for the solution to a specific problem. If you only write about a diverse range of problems, it's unclear why readers should subscribe because there's no clear editorial line. I don't want to receive an email about NextAuth, and one week later receive an email about video buffering. I may not care about video buffering. A newsletter works best when you have a clear editorial line, like "read my emails and you will make progress on {React core | Framer Motion | Next.js | Remix}". If you try to create content for everything at once, it's hard to become known for anything. The React ecosystem topic is too broad, you'd rather try to get known for a specific subtopic of React.

Third, you should become good at distribution so that you get some website traffic. Once you write an article you have to spend time promoting it to the right places. It might be contacting curation newsletter authors (like me) directly, or posting on social media... Spend as much time promoting your content, but don't be spammy either.

What makes your newsletter different/better than the others?

Instead of "Subscribe to my newsletter" maybe change it to "The only Javascript newsletter you need"
