How Do I Get Started?

I'm looking to make the transition to start working for myself and was interested to hear any tips, tricks or pain points you've experienced. Thank you!

In my experience shortage of time can be an issue, if you make enough income from a fulltime job a good way to free up time is to start working less for your boss / go parttime.

Now you have more incentive to do something with your free time as you're literally paying for it. It's also a safe way to give working for yourself a try without committing 100% in one go.

The switch is different for everybody. Some were born into it, molded by it, they didn't have a boss until they had an outside investor, by then it was merely an advisor.

But seriously though, depending on what you want to do, the way to maximize chances of success is to start building a portfolio and get some leads and testimonials. Then focus on building the business, not just serving one client at a time.

Rob Walling, the co-founder of Drip and organizer of microconf, has been talking about the stair step approach 1.

Basically start with something small (like an online course etc.) and repeat it a couple of times. Then you can focus on something like a SaaS fulltime.

I think best way would be to give some extra hours after your day job to create something that you want to. As you didn't mention about your interests, the answers can vary.

However the bottom line is you'll need to spend a few hours each day on your dreams and soon you'll find yourself more confident to achieve what you want.

    Best Luck.

Hi Laura! This could be interpreted in dozens of different ways. Could you expand on this and define what you're hoping to do with your time?

Hi @daveandreu Thank you for asking. I'm actually inspired to work on creating a product to help aspiring entrepreneurs (like myself) feel empowered to create their own businesses. I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to approach creating a product for this need. I don't really even know where to begin! haha

Being alone without anyone else telling you what to do is really hard. I’d suggest you to find a good coworking space but depending on where you live might not be feasible in the current situation.
