How do I meet other indie hackers abroad?

Hello folks,

currently I’m partially traveling and preparing everything to relocate next year.

While getting to know people feels quite easy I wondered if you got some tips on how to get to know other indiehackers oder like minded people? Are there any preferred platform’s/groups? Do you simply reach out to people via social media?

I’m currently in Lisbon 👋

Keep going

I'm not really a nomad (yet) and haven't met indie hackers in real life, so I'm curious what others have to say. But I've heard that https://nomadlist.com/ is pretty good to meet other people in your city.

Guess it developed to the go to platform. Will try out meetups this time and next occasion give it a shot with some preparation upfront.

Lisbon! I love Lisbon, you have to check out Zarzuela pastry shop, their pastel de nata are out of this world!

I have been travelling as a digital nomad for over 5 years now. The best way to meet like-minded people for me:

    1. Through the facebook local groups - ex-pats in *** (Lison, Ubud, Berlin etc), or digital nomads in Tenerife. Just search for the location whenever you are.

    2. Events - also mostly available on Facebook, look for events - the best way is to join some international ones, like English lesson exchange or travellers meetup

    3. Coworkings are the best! The best crowd is hanging over there. Also normally there are inside events organized by coworking for people to network or meet each other. My favourite coworking is definitely an Outpost ( they are in Bali and recently opened in Sri Lanka)

    Hope it helps :)

So started traveling a bit before COVID, but not had a ton of experience with this so far.

But here are some things I've been doing/trying:

    • Visit Coworking spots when you arrive, just drop by each one for 30-60 min to see it, get. a feel for the vibe etc. (Currently: message them a few days before to see if they are still open post-covid, if they are taking new members for hotdesking etc, some places are doing "private office only".)
    • Check FB events for any meetings that might be coming up
    • Check Startup Grind for meetings
    • Search on IH for that city/country name
    • Seach FB for Digital Nomad, Nomad etc + city or country name for FB groups to join
    • Google for Startup in the city/area to see if there are any incubators etc

As mentioned by Noah, @levelsio's NomadList is a good way to meet nomads too, look to see who is in that area and message them. Pre-Covid I met some great people that way. Lately not as much, but could just be people still not socializing as much? (Also good to remember that some tech/Digital nomad peeps are sometimes introverted and not great a being outgoing etc, I struggle with it).
