How do I start thinking like a marketer

I’m a developer and I like building products for the sake of it.

I want to build products that sell, and then actually sell them.

I can learn a lot by doing and failing of course, but maybe there’s some great resources or hacks that can make this process faster.

Read the book Influence, by Robert Cialdini.

I have read it 5 times.

Here are the top 5 takeaways that resonated with me:

    Reciprocity:

We are wired to return favors and strive for balance in social exchanges. In business, this could be as simple as giving valuable content for free to build customer loyalty.

    Commitment and Consistency:

Once we commit to something, we're more likely to go through with it due to a desire to look consistent. This is why getting small initial commitments can lead to larger commitments.

    Social Proof:

We look to others to decide what is correct behavior. Testimonials, case studies, and influencers are powerful tools because of this principle.

    Authority:

We tend to obey authority figures, even if we are asked to perform objectionable acts. Credibility is key in business and can be built through expertise and trustworthiness.

    Scarcity:

Perceived scarcity will generate demand. Limited-time offers or exclusive deals can create a sense of urgency to buy.

Not a 'marketing' book. But the fundamentals will start to blend into how you operate. How you think about product, how you structure marketing funnels...

For me, this was the gateway to marketing.

Thanks for the recommendation David, the book has been on my want-to-read list for a long time. And thanks for summarising some of the key principles, very useful :)

I think "Zero To Sold" was not that bad wrt finding where your customers hang out and building a tribe.

For me, it was the best to just do it. This is particularly true for SEO. In general, I'd suggest to keep the budgets low otherwise, you'll waste too much money.

Just one tip: Never try to sell anything to anyone

Can you expand on the tip? Sounds counter-intuitive.

A good salesman prioritizes building relationships, understanding customer needs, and providing value instead of focusing solely on making a sale.
You have to make customer realize what is his problem, and why your product can solve that problem, and come up to the point why it is the right time to solve his problem (not to buy your product).
During the whole process try to priorities the customer and his need not your product.

I really liked 22 Laws Of Marketing!

I enjoyed the book and course, "Marketing for Product People."
You might also want to research growth marketing (not growth hacking) and the pirate metrics framework. These topics will help you learn to view your potential buyer's process from stranger to customer.
