How do indie hackers manage life with kids?

Hi, I'm new to this group, I've started connecting and talking with some indie hackers and their experience how they manage their life and time, especially this time of year where everyone's working from home and taking care of kids.

How do you manage your time to do indie hacking business? What are some lessons and experience you can share how to be better at managing life and time?

I don't believe any one household is the same. I have 3 kids, and my wife runs a business along with my job and own company. It's not easy. But a consistency is needed in my case. We try to not push the kids away or require "alone time" when working. Instead, there is extra room around our workspaces that welcomes them to hang out and do something while working. I always try to welcome questions and conversation. My kids are no angels, but I feel by showing them my routine, they learn so much and appreciate my time more when they understand what "work" is. Hope this helps

Interesting, I’ll have to try the welcome them while working approach.

I’ve got 2 boys and I’ll hide away to work, otherwise I can’t channel my train of thoughts and get dragged into playing monopoly .... again :)

How do you manage this if working with the kids around?

Giving them small tasks helps. I've asked my daughter (8) to test one of our apps last week and she thought it was cool doing 'serious stuff'. She found a bug!

My son (11) likes coming up with app ideas. That's a lot more difficult, but he gets familiar with concepts like 'niche market' and 'business that scales'. Who knows, he might come up with a killer idea for his peers.

Hi, for now my solution is to spend time with them, and then try to sleep less (like waking up way early) so I have get a bit more free time.

Yea I think i'm going to have accept this rather than have everything spinning in my head.

I have a daily regular job so I work at night after putting my kid to bed, from 21.00 to max 05.00

Edit: sometimes I do fall asleep while typing.

From 21:00 to 5:00 is a bit too much I think, take care of your health too, because it's a marathon not a hackathon.

I know, I am conscious of this, I just do not have a choice at the moment...

I am building the site, I am designing it, I am marketing it ..I send the newsletters,... it takes a lot of time to do it right..

I often find that I'm so exhausted by the end of the day that I can hardly make any progress. My approach is simply to accept that this is a difficult time for all of us and that it's OK to slow down with my project. Anything else would only put more pressure on everyone in the family.

Of course, I also have the typical parent hacks like getting things done around 6 am when everyone is still asleep, but I'm sure that's nothing new to any parents here.

Nice to hear you sharing. I start learning to wake up at 5am to be able to do more work.

I used to try and grab every gap (5min, 10min, whatever) to do something. Later I discovered it did more harm than good. A few things that have been helping:

    • scale down expectations. I don't mind if it takes makes a while longer become indie.
    • my wife understand this obsession with becoming indie and gives me time. e.g after breakfast on weekend I'll ask her "Can you give one hour now?" and she'll stay with the kids. I'll also try to give her an hour or two if she wants/needs.
    • Sometimes I'll wake up early or stay up late for an extra hour or two
    • I allowed them to play in my room if they want whilst I'm working. They are starting to understand that I can't be playing with them and they entertain themselves for a bit :)

    I got a 4yo and a 2yo.

Ja, if we think about it, the reason we're earning money is for the kids. 5m here and there just does not make it, I need few hours straight to focus on working.

I have a 6yo, 4yo and 2yo and I've been working from home for he past 3 years.

I guess I've been a bit more fortunate during this time because the adjustment wasn't as severe for me and my wife. The biggest adjustment was figuring out how to become their teachers.

I've recently just started a newsletter for work from home parents (https://www.indiehackers.com/post/feedback-a-newsletter-for-work-from-home-parents-60475d5670) and I'm hoping to share tips, tools, and resources with other work from home parents.
