How do you approach content marketing when you find it boring?

I sometimes tell myself that to promote my products to a broader audience I should write blog posts, design infographics, create presentations with slides, etc., but I find it utterly boring.

Do you feel like me? How do you deal with that?

    Strategy, consistency and Systems.

People struggle with content because they don´t have those 3.

    1. When they don´t have a strategy, vanity metrics become the goal, not sales and feedback from their audience.

    2. When they don´t have systems, they don´t know what to post everyday, they lack creativity and they struggle.

    3. If they don´t have Strategy or Systems, consistency can´t happen. Without consistency people fail, give up and go back to their 9 to 5.

People like us don´t rely on hope marketing. We follow a strategy, build systems to optimize our time and creativity and we look for feedback in the audience not gurus.

Thanks @theeduardotorres! What do you exactly mean with "Systems"?

Hey @KudzaiLX! Systems are either a way to organize yourself better or marketing automation.

Let´s take content creation for example:

I can create a mindmap, a folder on my pc or even use notion to don´t have to think through the process.

        1. Content calendar
        2. Topics
        3. Templates
        4. Places to repurpose

All in one place. So if I´m having a bad day(like we all do have sometimes) or don´t have any ideas that day i will still produce better because i have a system.

Would love to hear your thoughts below.

Oh ok I see, that's like a framework! Maybe I should get one indeed, thanks!

A really huge help for me has been drumming up some general curiosity about the topic. If I need to create content about a particular boring industry, I try to find some angle on the industry that interests me.

There are loads of meta topics that can be interesting to you personally as you create content around these industries. For example, the stories of the companies and how they grew as businesses can appeal to you as an entrepreneur. Or, their practices around productivity or hiring could be interesting to you. Or even things like how the company does networking or working with partners to really grow. What do those agreements look like? How are those partnerships forged? Etc.

The fact that the company makes engine parts or something really boring to me doesn't seem to matter that much when I focus on learning about it through meta topics that are appealing.

A second way that I tried to make something interesting is to view it as practice for improving my own content marketing skills. Sure, writing a 3000-word article about resumes is no fun, but getting into the psychology of writing a piece that draws people in at the beginning, builds up their interest, and offers them the right lead magnet at the end for an eye-watering conversion rate, is something that I really want to practice myself all the time. This motivates me because I see this particular task as practice for that skill.

This applies to multiple angles. It could also be an opportunity for you to try new ways of working, like using text-to-speech. This is something I discovered recently and it's really helped me write a lot of content quickly. But I wouldn't have come across it unless I had viewed some of my boring tasks as opportunities to learn how to innovate and improve my practices.

OK, I quite get it, that are some nice ways to ghet started with it @benjaminboman!

I try to find some angle on the industry that interests me.

Oh so you are actually "customizing" the subject to make it kind of your own. My biggest challenge with this technique is that as soon as I start to write something that could interest me in the target industry, I always find myself writing off topic 😅

It could also be an opportunity for you to try new ways of working, like using text-to-speech.

Do you actually mean speech-to-text or did I not understood you?

      1. 2

For the first, yes - just try to learn the ins and outs of the topic. Example, I need to create content about becoming a pilot- It's actually good opportunity for me to learn about this industry in general and how flying works.

For the second, yes sorry that was my typo. I meant speech to text.

Another idea on the same vein here is learning how to do a better content promotion. It's a never ending skill.

Speech-to-text sounds like an interesting way to do it for me! Someone already suggested this to me, so I should give it a try!

          Thanks!

Option 2.5: force yourself to do it until you f*cking love it.

Did you personally experience this torture? 😂

      1. 3

        Pretty much, went from;

        1. OMG, please, I don't want to write.
        2. Come on, can't someone else write?
        3. Meh, ok, I'll write/create something.
        4. Yo, I thought of an idea that might work. Let's check it out.
        5. LET'S WRITE MOREEEE. RESULTS, RESULTS, RESULTS (dopamine)
        1. 1

Ok, you basically pushed yourself through every stage 😅 did you see any positive results after this?

          1. 2

I did. It took a couple of blogs and videos. I had to get over the initial bump of uneasiness (if that’s the best way to describe it).

And yes, very positive results. Although not every piece of content is a “hit,” some have brought me business, while others put me in contact with some interesting people.

That motivated me enough that I now enjoy creating and experimenting with content.

            1. 1

OK great! I should try to force myself to do it then 🤙
