How do you communicate with the first users?

Hello everybody,

here is a story.

I've started a new project last week and now getting new users. Me and my co-owner spend a month or two in a spare time to create a Minimum Loved Product and now we are trying to talk to real users. We need to get some feedback to understand, are we on the right way and what we need to add to our product to make it better and, of course, convert users to customers.

And do you know how to communicate with users in a better way? Do you have a template or recommendation of how to write a better email? Or is it better for users to popup some dialog on a site?

Also, do you like to communicate with service owners to give a feedback? Or you just ignore all of this?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

Hey Anton, for people who register for https://www.oneupapp.io/ , I record a short personal video for them using Loom. All I do is say, "Thanks for checking us out, and let me know if you need anything".

A while back, I would then email this video to the recent signups. However, I found that the open rate on my videos was incredibly low. (Loom notifies you when your videos have been watched)
I think people thought it was just an automated email with a pre-recorded "message from our founder" type thing.

Because most people who use OneUp connect a Facebook page (we're a social media scheduling tool), I started sending the videos in a Facebook message to them, rather than email. I have found that the video open rate on these FB messages is nearly 100%!

People are normally blown away by the personal touch, and it creates a great inital impression. It's not scalable forever, but I can definitely keep doing it with signups that look like high-value customers based on demographic info.

Thank you for the detailed answer, David. How much time do you spend on these personal videos and how much replies do you have?

Takes me about 20 seconds to record the videos, and I almost always get a reply from it :)

I highly recommend you read "The Mom Test" by Rob Fitzpatrick.

Thanks a lot, heard a lot about this book, not it's time to read it finally :-)

Hey Anton, in a previous project we had an Intercom widget that would pop open on specific actions. One was after a user would fail a couple times at doing something and it would say something like "Hey do you need some help?". Conversions were really good and people really liked to have the message in context.

Maybe you could try something similar with your product. If you have some actions that mean that a user is engaged, it might be a good occasion to pop a message and ask for feedback. I would definitely set some rules to make sure that it's not right after signing up and more like something happening after a bit of usage.

Hey Sten, thanks for your reply. Well, we are using feedback form on site, but popping it on some trigger is a great idea too. Can you share some conversion rates, how many users do you have and how many users write feedbacks on your projects?

I am no authority, but in my business I sent an initial email presenting myself and asking for feature requests. I sent it to ~50 free signups and only one replied. But she went on to be the only one to convert from that initial batch.

I am now creating an onboarding email sequence where I provide some value (through relevant content). 4 or 5 emails in the following weeks after the signup. I hope it performs better and generates more engagement, let's see.

Rodrigo, thank you for your reply. How do you send this email sequence, do you have any tool for it, or you built it in your project, or you're doing it by hand?

Also, how much time do you spend to talk with your users a day or a week?

I use Sendinblue, which is the same provider I use for transactional email and have a feature for "automation".

But there are tons of tools that do this, from Mailchimp to a fellow indie hacker solution: https://bluetick.io/
