How do you conduct a Sales Safari

I'm sure a lot of fellow Indie Hackers are familiar with the concept of Sales Safari.

The TL;DR version of it is that you define your target audience, find places online where they meet and discuss and observe their behavior. Basically taking notes about their problems, the jargon they use and the recommendations they give each other.

Doing this for a long time (~30 / 40 hours) should give you enough information to see patterns and figure out what your traget audience is struggling with ATM.

Late last week I started with this approach and I'm already hundreds of lines in (doing this in a large Excel sheet). There are some patterns but mostly the complaints / problems are all over the place.

Currently I'm clicking on any thread that has at least 2 comments, read through it and extract the main problem / pain points the community members are talking about. This results in a ton of data but sometimes I feel that a post isn't really worth investigating and the pain might be too tangential. However if I only focus on subjectively "important" topics I might end up with a lot of data coming from my own search for confirmation bias.

Another interesting question is where you draw the line for the online communities you're conducting research on. If I my target audience for example is "Content Marketers" do you only focus on "Content Marketing" forums or do you also look into places related to "Business Blogging" and "Marketing"?

So how do you conduct a Sales Safari? What's your process? How do you ensure that you get enough useful data to make a decision?
