Hello Indie Hackers,
I recently launched a SaaS for Discord communities, featuring a complementary newsletter. It has a standard plan that's free, but also a premium one with enhanced features like advanced access control, improved management, community perks, and AI-based assistance.
Since the rollout, I've garnered over 20,000 users, of which 87% are using the free service and only about 12-13% have opted for the paid version.
In your experience, is such a large free user base standard for a SaaS product? While it's great to see users finding value even in the free service, the server costs are a looming concern for me as the users grow.
How have you dealt with similar situations? What strategies have you found effective in converting free users to upgrade to paid plans?
Thanks!
Ok, so we've had a similar situation with Seodity. It's not a big problem if you have a lot of freemium users, but when they eat up a significant portion of your revenue, you should change something. And in SEO tool infrastructure costs are significant.
What we did was to eliminate the freemium option. First, we introduced a 7-day free trial, and now we have a 7-day $7 trial, which has been working the best out of the three options. Of course, fewer people are deciding to try our app, but those who do often convert to full subscription users.
Every SaaS is different, but it's something to consider :)
Can I dm you? I think I got an interesting idea for an AI powered SaaS after a deep market research.
