How do you decide that your idea is validated and worth building?

When you validate new product, how do you decide that it's worth pursuing or it's better to move to something else?

X number of signups? X number of paying customers? Probably it all depends, but do you have any suggestions about what that X number should be?

I guess I would ask how early along you're talking?

Ideally your product would be predicated off of a real problem encountered by real people. As for validation, I think there's quite a lot of good literature on gauging traction (and ergo value) available from the folks over at YC (Michael Seibel's seminar on "Building Product" jumps to mind).

    1. Are you personally invested and interested in this idea and do you see yourself staying interested long term
    2. is it making money

If the answer to this is both "no", then it's not worth your time. That's how I look at it.

    For me it's one (1).

If I can help 1 person when I'm starting a new product and they say it really helped them that's enough for me.

The reason why is because that one person starts you to think about many issues that you didn't think about before. You go explore and find more issues that you didn't think about and find more people with the same and variations of the problem.

If I can't find 1 person that says this is great I want more that's when I would move on...
