How do you do get started with Marketing?

I recently launched my first project - a flexible Google Sheets template for personal finance, that I have been using myself for years.

I was planning on building a full-on SaaS but decided to validate the idea first by trying to sell the Google Sheets template first.

Through an accidental Twitter comment, I got my first user.

But that's about how far I've gotten.

I created a submission in Product Hunt - got around 24 upvotes and 120-page views, but no new sales.

Now obviously the reason no one is buying is that these are random people and not the ones that might be interested in personal finance, so now I'm kind of stumped on where to go next with marketing?

Since I got my first sale, Im confident that I can also keep on pushing and get the next. The question is what to do next?

Do you go full-on blog post mode and start writing SEO articles to gather some traction? Do you just randomly start spamming subreddits? Or is TikTok an option?

I don't have anything against doing any of these things, I'm just curious has anyone here tried selling a similar product and if so, how did you start reaching out to your potential customers?

    You need to ask yourself “So what?” Your product showcases people’s net worth. Okay. So? Where’s the punchline? What’s next? How does this help ME except remind me that I’m broke?

    Provide some sort of value to the user.

    I don't have much experience either, but the only two products I've created and launched (just two months ago) have gotten at least ten users a day, 80 users max. I achieved that solely through blogs and social media posts.

    • A blog to introduce the product, it's features and why I built it, as well as hinting some of the upcoming features I have in mind.
    • Then some other code related blogs about how I built some specific features, or about the development and design process.
    • Then also some tweets and posts on other social networks (in my case mostly Telegram and Showwcase), Reddit would work if the post it's not too spammy.

    This will at least get you some attention and traffic. At least to get started. Then if you get traction you can move to higher levels of marketing.

      Yeah, this is what I also realised, that there really is no magic bullet for Marketing :)

      I was hoping to avoid doing blogs since they're quite time-consuming, but it looks like if I want consistent traction that's the best way on going forwards.

      I'm also really keen on experimenting with TikTok as an easier but more engaging form of content than blogs - but I have 0 experience with creating content on there, so I guess that we'll just see

    Find your unfair advantage.

    As a developer that usually means code. Can you build free tools that will drive traffic to your tool?

    I built https://saaspages.xyz/ and got 2000+ upvotes on PH with it.
