I donate at the checkout line a lot. If I'm asked whether I'd like to donate $1-5 to charity X, the answer is generally yes.
My employer is big on VTO (volunteer time off). There's a lot of sites online that help people donate time and skills (I'm a developer), but most of the tasks require proficiency in more generic languages and frameworks (wordpress, php) that I have no interest or experience in. Haven't had much luck here (but I would ultimately rather donate skills and time when possible).
I'd love to donate more regularly, like some sort of subscription. But, I'd want the money going to local causes and communities (city, metro, or state), and I'd want total transparency (and thus accountability)
from the organization. How much are they receiving, and where is each dollar being spent. In the United States private charities are way more effective than government ran welfare programs, as far as the number of dollars reaching those in need.

Yoodonate is more of a cash donations platform, but you’ve given me some ideas about opening it up as a means of capturing donations of time and skills as well. That’s brilliant.
The point around transparency of how the funds will be used is also important to me. I’ve built that into the app design, by enabling charities to specify campaigns/baskets (eg for a church those might be things like “homeless outreach”, “roof leak repairs” etc.
I have in my backlog to enable financial target to be set for each basket, which can be tracked against.
In terms of donating to local causes, is also considered and users would be able to sort charities by distance to their current gps location.

One other thing I stumbled across after reading this post was the existence of "charity watchdog" type sites which basically give a rating to charities (can't recall the one I looked at, but it was pretty underwhelming). I think thats a cool integration as well: showing your users that a charity is what it says it is. There's been all sorts of crowdfunding fraud in the news, and I could see people taking advantage of platforms like this for those sorts of things too.
