How do you find a name for your product?

There are six keyword types for a name: Generic, Exact Match, Brandable, Acronym, Numeric and Alphanumeric.

My domain name followchain.org is sort of a mix of an exact match and brandable (made up/combination of words).

The top three keyword types for startups that became unicorns in 2018 are typically Brandable (made up/combination of words), single generic words and exact match.

For character count, the most common length is 6 characters. So in general, shorter names are better.

Lastly, singular names tend to perform better than plural ones.

My product is for web developers and I've always been a fan of the "joy" suffix (logojoy, homejoy, etc). One of the first ones I checked was divjoy.com. It wasn't taken, so I just went with it! Normally I spend weeks agonizing over a name so it was pretty nice to make that decision and move on.

I would come up with like 25-100 names. Just go in and don't stop brainstorming for like a week straight.

Then strap them all to ads and run them for like a $1 each. See which ones get the most clicks, then use that name.

In general, I've found that the names for my projects come at the most random times. For one of the Hackathon food web app projects I created for the Yale 2018 Hackathon, I was eating lunch with a few of my team members. Out of nowhere, the name BusyBites came to my head.

I think it's a good idea to just constantly have your app in the back of your mind. Then if any inspiration strikes - even at the most random times - see if good name pops out.
