How do you find potential investors if you don't have a network?

I've been thinking about this problem for quite a while, and it does seem like a daunting task for newer entrepreneurs. The obvious method would be cold emailing/calling investors on various investor lists or LinkedIn, but is there another method you guys would recommend?

Any suggestions or your own personal experiences with finding investors would be appreciated!

  1. 1

If this is your first investment, your initial investors will come from your network.

That's no just because you're early stage, and have basic traction.

The ability to convince people that already know you is something professional investors highly value. It's not only a testament to your character, but also your capacity as a salesman / woman.

The second group of people that will invest, will be from your professional network, who know the problem you're trying to solve. Again, this is a signal to professional investors.

Only once you've secured buy-in from those investors will the professional investors take a serious look at you.

You can find free lists of professional investors on Crunchbase, with contact details.

Or better still, target senior top ranking corporate professionals on Linkedin in a complimentary market. Ask them for advice rather than investment.

    As the saying goes:

If you're looking for advice, ask for investment.
If you're looking for investment, ask for advice.

    Happy hunting! ;)
