How do you gain users?

Some weeks ago I finally launched my first real project "deliciously.cooking", I still need to advertise the site and gain actual users. So, my question is, how did you do this at your project(s)?

I thought of taking the site back to a coming soon landing page, where people can register for a beta test, I think this would be great for actually getting the first content.
