How do you get into a flow while coding?
by
Aarvy
How do you get into a flow while coding?
I play the same movie over and over again containing good music - like Drive, Interstellar, or Blade Runner 2049.
I do this in a similar way. I have movie music playlists with all the good atmospheric stuff on Spotify for this reason.
Nature cannot make leaps. Your base should be solid.
Get the basics right first.
When you are in a good place, the flow comes naturally.
I am sorry but I had to do this 😂

lol, I agree that it is extremely difficult to overcome depression, but it is necessary overcome depression in order to be productive in life.
The best way to get out of a funk is to make a list of small achievable goals for each day and then tick them of at the end of the day. Doing it for 7 days straight is quite helpful and puts a person on track. Do not know about any one else, but it helped me.
Yes, That is simple & actionable. I think finding a sustainable structure to reassure yourself that you are on the right track is the key. The means to that sustainable structure vary. BTW, I am working on an iOS app that keeps me on track.
I use Trello (Kanban) to focus on my tasks, when the project grows it is necessary to get things out of my mind to reduce anxiety.
I look for a quiet place where I can work and start with the simplest task like changing the color of a button or adding a margin in a div, the important thing is to start.
I think something that is important for me is to use an IDE in full screen and use the keyboard shortcuts to switch between windows and to use the IDE like moving to the terminal, switching between files or going to a function.
Typically some relaxing / non-lyrical music, and lots of tea. I'm using a single screen, so set up multiple virtual desktops for easy switching between web browser > editor > application.
I always have YT / Games / reddit etc blocked in the day, so that helps me avoid the easy common distractions.
Solve one simple problem...then another...and another
Yep, I know it sounds empty, but this is how you get complex things done and how you keep the feedback loop going for motivation.
Make sure your spouse and kids needs are met first, or send them somewhere fun for the day. Eliminate the distractions. Turn phone on silent. Close Teams or Slack. Ignore everything but set a timer for when you need to rejoin the real world.
To get flow, I try to set myself up to have a tight feedback loop. For example, if you use something like NextJS, it instantly reloads when you make a code change, and keeps the data around. This is brilliant for getting immediate feedback. Or another way is unit tests. Slow feedback loops encourage procrastination for me.
Things that may break flow for me is switching gears. Especially finishing one thing and starting the next. I had all that nice context loaded up in my brain and now I need to think of something new. I usually take a coffee break at these points and psych up to do this new thing after.
Also, plan out your day. Nothing fancy, just scribble on paper or use notepad.exe. While doing this check emails, calendar, slack etc. This anticipates surprises and interruptions before they happen.
The basics:
Then, you can use the Pomodoro technique to force your self to just sit-down and code, it lets you focus on what you can achieve in just 25mins instead of worrying about the whole project or task which would make you nervous and spend time stressing out about it.
On my iPhone, I use Endel for generating focus music and Forest for Pomodoro.

https://apps.apple.com/il/app/forest-focus-for-productivity/id866450515
Hope it helps.
do TDD, I recently started, and not messing around in the browser to test what you just wrote, but having test, that show you instantly that everything still works or not, allows me to stay in it.
I plan what I will be doing the night before. In the morning I go to the gym, shower, then make myself a coffee and breakfast.
The first 2-4 hours usually go pretty well. Obviously sometimes you can't get into flow state because of interruptions.
Get a quick win.
Complete and ship (if you're CI/CD) a small feature to start the day.
Completing a task releases dopamine. Dopamine is a critical neurotransmitter for achieving flow state. It's compounding.
Everyone has experienced the "I can't quit now, I'm on a roll" state.
This is how you can trigger it frequently!
I have an habit of having my headphones on without playing any music, it helps me enter the flow state.
I love coffee shop background noise. So i'll wake up early and find one of those hipster coffee shops near me, grab a cozy corner, and just zone into whatever i need to get done for extended periods of time.
For me what helps is watching a video or listening to a podcast about coding. For instance, watching 10 minutes of George Hutz really gets my excited to crank some code out. Helps remind me of my goals of being a developer too.
The most important thing for me is to have a clear list of very clear and specific tasks that I need to get done. If it's even slightly fuzzy or too vague like "Today I'm gonna sit down and work on X project". I just get distracted and get little done. Sometimes music helps, in which case it's mostly repetitive music with no vocals to distract me.
For me it's about:
To keep the flow in the long term I created a tool with "non blocking pomodoros", with sound notifications and I'm a fan!
It's called Focus plus
lowfi chill hop jazz ( not joking)
start with this one
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2Al9G2jrWkwDlRFMZaw1GX?si=ddb8afaf38354156
I'd say it's mostly a conscious choice; you have to sit down ready to commit your mind completely to the task at hand.
But I also have a few tricks ;)
I usually like facing a wall rather than towards the rest of the room or a window.
I don't remember where I read this, but apparently, even seeing your phone will distract you to some degree.
Every time you check your email/slack/discord in the middle of a development session, it's going to take you a few minutes just to get your mind back on track. I like to close out every other application and window I can, so I only have my IDE and one browser tab for whatever I'm making. Turn off notifications if you have to as well.
This is just a personal choice, but ever since I got in the habit of wearing blue light-blocking glasses, it's helped me to focus. I think it's a conditioning thing because I don't wear them outside of working on my laptop.
Those are the things that come to mind. I'd recommend looking up Cal Newport if you want to learn more about this stuff. He's the author of Deep Work, and his Youtube channel is great.

I always have pen and paper handy. Before I start coding, I write down what I am going to solve and break it down into steps. Than I start coding for each step and do not stop till all the steps are done and I have run at least one test.
The act of noting it down on a physical medium, primes my brain to get into a flow. I use not taking apps like notion only to gather content.
your post is very nice, https://www.elitepassion.club/call-girls/gurgaon

You can try some motivation song while coding, I mostly play this song, Unstoppable -Sia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaEG2aWJnZ8
I write down what I want to achieve on the WBE Space Slack Channel. Start a pomodoro timer and some lofi and start coding :D
