How do you go about collecting client testimonials?

Everyone knows its important collect client testimonials. But from my experience, many freelancers don't do this. At least not consistently.

Recently I was reading this article and thinking about it 🤔 https://millo.co/testimonials-hidden-goldmine-use-like

So I'm curious, if you're a freelancer, how do you go about collecting testimonials?

Do you find it easy, hard, or maybe a bit awkward? Do you have a process? What would make it easier for you?

🚀 We're building growth tools for freelancers at Betterlance (https://betterlance.co) and we're considering a tool to help freelancers collect testimonials.

Would love your feedback ✌️

    I have 2 things

A quick one to growth hack the google search with Google maps

    (Don't forget to add me 5 ⭐)

And deeper one with airtable (because everything related to my freelance is here, and I can fetch data with their api)

Whenever someone tells our support they like our product or support experience we ask them to leave us a review and point them to the form for Trustpilot or Capterra. Works really well :)

Yes, @wardsandler those work great for products. I haven't seen any freelancers utilize those platforms though.

      1. 1

True, but you could repurpose the technique and instead of linking to e.g. Trustpilot, link to a Typeform/Google form that collects their testimonial text and a headshot.

I don't think it's difficult. I try to request a testimonial once the project is near 100% complete or shortly after when the client is still on their "high", I find this to be the best way to get a quality and detailed testimonial. Typically, I let the client know when we kick-off the project that it would be great to get a testimonial upon completion of the project if they are satisfied so I can prep them to be mentally ready to provide a testimonial.

@matchmike1313 yes, timing is key. Do you have a page/place where you feature all your testimonials?

It's been awhile since I've been a contractor. But, I used to sprinkle them into my proposals!

I've always asked clients who have voiced their satisfaction with my work to provide a few sentences for a testimonial. They've all been gracious and have sent me one when asked!

@radiomorillo thats great! Do you feature or share these testimonials anywhere?

      1. 1

I do! I have them on my main Work page (up top) and I have them on two subpages: Copywriting and Copyediting

I think it's pretty straightforward, honestly.

In a lot of engagements, you'll receive testimonials naturally through the course of the project. If they client compliments the work, I'll ask them if I can use that as a testimonial.

If I don't get that, if they are happy I will ask them at the end of an engagement if they'd be willing to give me a testimonial. If they say yes but are slow to respond, sometimes I'll write it for their approval.

With my main business Unreal Collective, I'll do video testimonials that only require a couple minutes of their time and no prep.

@jayclouse this is great feedback. Love the video testimonials.

I'm curious, despite it being straightforward, do you see freelancers struggle with this or not take advantage of it? If so, why do you think that is?

@simond Yea, definitely wouldn't want to pester a client for a testimonial.

      2 things I'm curious about:

      1. Do you have a format that you are looking for the testimonial to fit in to?
      2. Do you share/feature these anywhere?
