How do you grow a Twitter account from 0 without being spammy?

How do you get a Twitter account off the ground?

I just made a new Twitter account bc I want to start building in public and eventually promote the sass company I'm working on. Right now I'm tweeting to no one. I know it's good to interact with larger accounts but it's hard to do without feeling like I'm spamming. I only comment when I can add value but even then it just feels obvious that I'm just trying to grow my account.

I don't have a strong Twitter following but have worked with people who do. Their advice:
- Pick 1-3 topics to write about. (Examples: marketing, productivity, SaaS.) Stick to writing only about these until you've developed a larger following. It's hard to build an audience if your tweets seem scattered or unfocused.
- Write good content—and do so consistently. Good content is valuable content. It makes people want to engage through a like, reply, or retweet. Consistency means having a regular schedule, like posting a few times a day/week (rather than once every other month).
- Meaningfully interact with people in your niche. So if you're focusing on marketing, productivity, and SaaS, look for others tweeting about the same thing. Reply to their tweets with questions and thoughtful comments.
- ^To keep tabs on these people, create Twitter lists of them. Don't just follow them. The Lists function is way better for tracking others' tweets in real time.
