How Do You Grow Your Audience?

Hi IH!

Many successful founders point to their audience as a key factor to their success.

Lately I've been more intentional about building my (small) audience, believing that daily investments made in building my audience today (adding value, answering questions, making connections) will yield dividends for future endeavors.

Twitter is my chosen platform (jon_blankenship) . April 1 I made a goal to get to 200 followers by the end of the month (starting from 140), and I passed that goal yesterday, so time to make a new goal!

But I'm curious what other Indie Hackers are doing...

  • Are you actively building your audience, and if so, how?
  • Any good tips for building an audience?
  • What's your platform of choice?

Feel free to share your username so others can follow - let's help each other out!

When growing an audience on Twitter, I think the most important thing is to provide value in your Tweets. But here's another strategy that I've been using that seems to work (I'm still early in my journey and my audience is small, so take it with a grain of salt)...

Identify someone on Twitter who has more followers than you and whose message is similar to yours. Use https://followerwonk.com/ Compare Users feature (it's free) to identify followers of theirs that don't follow you. Go thru their users 1-by-1 looking at their profiles and recent tweets.

From this process I follow users who...

    • Have a have a headline that catches my eye and aligns w/ my interests/message
    • Have recent tweets/retweets that align w/ my interests/message
    • Have a Social Authority >30 (i.e., not accounts that haven't tweeted since 2018)
    • Have more than 100 followers
    • Have more than 100 users that they're following (don't want someone who's followed by 10,000 but only following 50 - they prob won't follow you back)

I'm looking for high-quality connections here that are likely to see me as someone who's worth following back and who are likely to engage with me. Definitely not trying to churn through users.

Following someone is like introducing yourself. If someone with similar tweets/message sees that you followed them, hopefully they'll take a look at your profile and recent tweets and feel like you're worth following back. I'll add maybe 10-20 people I follow per day this way, and oftentimes I'll get 25% or more who follow me back. Your follow-back rate will depend on the quality of people you choose to follow, and how closely they align w/ your interests.

This works best if you're already tweeting regularly on topic and consistently providing value.

Bringing them FREE value - that's how we started to build our initial base at rejuvia (www.rejuviamedical.com).

Bring them value before you try to bring them in for a sale - show them a glimpse of what you can offer them, and that will open a curiosity gap, and thus more conversions.

What we did was adopt a more educational approach. this allowed us to have new, fresh content every time we wanted to educate, and people started paying attention
