How do you grow your mailing lists?

Recently, I've been trying to grow my subscriber list for https://copythat.io (it's a newsletter aimed at helping front-end devs and designers get better and stay inspired).
I've shared on Twitter, answered some questions on Quora, reposted to Medium, and shared with friends and people I think would find it interesting. But I haven't had anything that seems to reliably grow my list.
I'm a little scared of Hacker News and Reddit, especially when I don't currently have any karma on those sites.
Have any hackers out there successfully grown a mailing list? If so, what techniques were most effective for you?

I think the most important thing is to provide something of meaningful value for free, and in order to receive this thing, require that the person sign-up to the email-list.
You definitely have to lead with value here.
This is also a good indicator that you are actually creating something of value.
In other words, if you can't get a meaningful number of people to sign-up for your email-list, then you (probably) won't be able able to get many purchasers of your product/service.
I actually tried to error on providing too much value. So I created a free course where you received a lesson a week for ten weeks. I think it took me close to three months to create this. In other words, that was the main thing I was working on for those three months.
Once you have something of value, then find forums where people would value this thing you provided and where it is appropriate to the forum and the forum's rules.

The stronger is your pillar, the more subscribers you can add in your list.
However, if you want to build your list faster then you may use tools like AeroLeads which is a robust email marketing tool which can help you to create email list(as per your requirement) as well to run the email campaign.

To grow my influencer marketing newsletter I used LinkedIn. I directly connect with people who I think would get the most out of the knowledge each week. This get me roughly 30 new sign ups a week.
I also post links to the content on LinkedIn once a week. I Estimate this gets me about 10 new sign ups a week.
A huge success for me was creating a list of the 100 most influential people in influencer marketing. I created the page and let those on it know. Asked them to post it on LinkedIn or Twitter.
Got 6k pageviews and 300 sign ups within 2 weeks.
Wow, that's a direct one. I wonder if that would translate to developers as well.
Did you have anything that helped on LinkedIn particularly?
I started manually connecting on LinkedIn then used MeetLeonard once I had an idea of what worked and what didnt.
You can try to give something for free (a list of 10 tips, an exercise...), it's what works the best for me!
Hey James, nice design. This is a cool idea. I tried to see an example of one newsletter and couldn't find one. You should maybe consider having at least 1 previous example available (some newsletters even have all their backlog online).

I've mainly been using Twitter to build interest for my most recent project, if it's something useful then it can get picked up by some big accounts. Also being active in Telegram & Maker communities to get early feedback and interest. But I'd like to know more about this, it's not growing by hundreds a week or anything ha.

Also interested in this James! I'm preparing to launch my first SaaS (https://reviewdrop.io) and looking at methods to grow my subscriber list before launching. How was your response with Quora? I think we just need to be consistent. Have you tried any Instagram marketing? This is an area I've just started today.
It was a bit of a slog. Not too bad if you're just doing it with 5 mins to spare on the tube, but I didn't notice any traffic from it.
It's perhaps something I could return to, but it didn't feel massively productive.

To promote my main startup, I started a monthly newsletter. To promote newsletter I've built another free project -- http://dir.fbamonthly.com .
So far, it's just a simple spreadsheet with a custom domain, but it already helps us grow newsletter subscriber list... at the same time I get feedback on more data from users.
I notify some facebook groups about another issue of newsletter. Since our it's monthly, it doesn't seem to bother page admins as much. But we get a constant stream of subscribers from those groups.
I'm also pretty active on reddit, but it doesn't bring as much subscribers as other sources.
I also get subscribers https://ingramer.com. Various possibilities. I am very pleased with the work of this application, it helped me at the right time)) when choosing, the function of mass unsubscribe was important to me, it is there.
