How do you manage your kids online/app experience?

Just noticed Roblox has gone public on NYS.

Valued at $30B with a 60% first day surge or something like that.

That's Roblox, the platform I rejected a few years back for my kids because the content seemed pretty unregulated.

Such as games where a hockey-mask wearing killer stalks your kid with a bloody machete.

Surely they must have cleaned up their act.

So, just downloaded app, signed up as a 9 year old and the hockey-mask psycho machete killer was there waiting for me.

And yeah, he killed me in 2 minutes.

If you play the game, that's my blood on his knife.

My kids are now just starting to play games, 5yo and 3yo. The 5yo just started Roblox because older cousins are playing. Think she played one or two games which seemed ok. For now, I'll let her be until she starts playing something that freaks me out.

On other games, they haven't asked me to install something I didn't approve.

Youtube is scarier. There's a bunch of weird sh*t that ends up in front of their eyes. I've had to go full strict mode on youtube. "You can watch it as long as it's disney/movie songs and cartoons you'd otherwise see on TV" like Masha and the bear. Nothing else.

In terms of screen time, we've been on lockdown for 2 months. Some days it's a lot some days they don't want. I'd like as much as I can to let them self-control a bit. However, I'll do my best to be outside most of the time :)

Thanks. True older siblings/relatives pull kids to older games. Imo 3 & 5 too young to self-manage but that's just my view. A big problem with Youtube is you basically have adult/non-adult boundary then nothing else. I wouldn't let young kids loose on it. Have heard several cases where kids seen disturbing material which at young age is damaging. I've used Common Sense Media for recommendations. Not always in agreement with them but it's best I've found so far for random titles you've never heard of! I've set strict filtering which eventually they bypass but they are older by then of course.

Thanks. How do you decide the apps. Many popular ones are imo very questionable to say the least. I don't think there's a good solution for parents of young kids. Can't trust Coppa for one.
