How do you pick a name for your project?

I am interested in the process you use picking a name for your project.
- When do you do it? (eg before starting to work on it or right before launching)
- Do you use some naming tools, and which do you recommend?
- Do you choose the name before buying the domain? How critical is it for you to have it with a specific TLD?
- Do you have any tips that could help others to choose a name for their projects?
- How big do you think is the weight of the naming, URL of the project in the future growth/success of it?

When I decide to pursue an idea, coming up with the name is one of my favorite parts. I go for something that I can create a story behind and that relates very well with my target audience.
I also make sure the .com is available or can be purchased reasonably (read cheap). It is a rare occasion that I choose a non-.com.
I have a card game that has taken a back burner to the displeasure of my family and friends. I needed a name for the game itself and a name for the game company. The game's name didn't need to be a website but the company obviously did.
After lots of thinking and searching for availability, I decided on BaddaCell.com. (bad as hell). Fun name, fits a gaming company, and is relatable with my target audience.
Just one example but that is my approach every time:
Care to explain why you tend to choose .com domains? The good one are always taken. Does it really matter so much? (I'm in a process of choosing one.) I strongly agree on other two points. Thank you.
As for why I go through the struggles to get a .com, it is to make the website more attractive to buyers. Deep pocket buyers.
Google doesn't care anymore which domain you use. But some buyers like to stick with what is familiar and trusted.
But there are, of course, exceptions to everything. I do have a .at because it fit the name and audience better. Same for a .org I picked. There is a .net I am considering because the owner of the .com has his contact info set to private.
I certainly don't think my approach is the only way to decide on a name. What is your approach? And...if you need any help or input on selecting a name I don't mind helping.
Thank you Rooso! Acctually I agree with you on everything. Except I had a feeling that .com is not so relevant anymore. I'd add "rememberable" to your list (easy to remember), but that's probably purpose of your story.
I am choosing a name and my main problem is that I'm not a native english speaker. My brother started selling on Amazon and since he did SEO on AppStore and GooglePlay he's aware of the importance of search rank, proper keywords etc. He misses a tool to measure search rank by different keywords. That's where I stepped in. Now what would a name of such a service be....? I'd be glad if you could help. Thank you!

Something like rankfirst? The .com is taken but I'm sure you could find an available domain.

I agree that it gets easier to design around the name. If you need a cheap logo you can use one of the free logo design sites (freelogodesign.org is one but there are a few). They will give you a low resolution image of the logo and you can take that to a site like fiverr.com to get a vector made.
Or you can use a site like vecteezy.com to get free vectors to play around with and design your own logo.
I can't draw so I have to find ways around it. I have also purchased drawings from graphicriver.net. I love Envato!
