How do you practice self care?

If feels like there is no shortage of people saying we should all be taking better care of ourselves, but how do you go about it? What works for you? And what doesn't work?

    • Running 2-3 times per week... would love to do this 4-5 times
    • Frequent walks outside through the day - ideally every 2 hours, music > podcasts
    • Reading before bed, typically nonfiction but I hear fiction is better
    • Weekly yoga class (perfect for re-centering)
    • Weekly journaling top events from the week in a paper journal (1 page per week makes it fun to look back on)
    • Nightly gratitude journaling (but I'm a little biased with Happyfeed

Gotta get on the meditation train - especially now that it's winter and long hot showers just make my skin super dry and itchy 😅

I always meet lots of advice in the medias about "how to love yourself" or "how take care of yourself" and hardly a few of them may work with ordinary people. I mean, there are so many opinion leaders and bloggers, who sometimes don't know how to live in a real stress and how it is to work in several places in one time, trying to do what you like along with the hard work, which brings you money.
There are so many comments and advice like: run every morning at 6 a.m., drink a glass of water every 2 hours, sleep well (at least 8 hours), tell yourself motivations that you can do everything you want. But it doesn't work if you have deep stress or a depression because of all of this pressure on you.
So, as for me, the only thing which works in such situations is a good rest. Not just a weekend spent in front of the Netflix, but visiting my relative's countryside house or spend a week on the shore\forest\mountains. It's the only things, help to distract from all the problems, renew your mind and body and give you new strength.

Yes, and it's very frustrating that people who write in general write about situations that most can't properly relate to.

e.g. so much of growth content talks about how successful/unicorn business achieved xyz. Which is totally irrelevant to the rest of us.

Also, what springs to mind is the Tim Ferriss' Morning Routine video from Business Insider - a routine that is just a bit like what kind of a world do you live in?! This morning routine video is a nice antidote to that. :)

Easier said than done, but the more you can look internally for your own well being, the better.

    1. Sleep
    2. Exercise
    3. Everything else. If I don't get those first two then I don't stand a chance of sustaining a healthy workload for the long run.

    For me it has been:

    • running and more recently strength training.
    • walking instead of the car when possible
    • reading before bed
    • I never feel guilty for having an extra sleep when I need it :)
    • spending time with the family

I know I need to get better at sleeping. I stay up too late all the time and then struggle to get out of bed in the morning. I don't have the luxury of a lie in with kids and often my nights are disturbed, even if it is less so these days.

I actually went to sleep before 11pm last night, it's been ages since I've done that...and I feel much better today as a result!

I'd love to do Yoga, I've dipped in and out of it, but haven't quite managed to form a habit around it yet.

Cooking is a good one for me. And with cooking I mean elaborated stuff, with lot's of ingredients and steps.

I have to pay attention to what am I doing, and that help me to disconnect from my project.

Oh yes, cooking is a good one. Especially when I batch cook and know that the next few days of feeding the family will be that bit easier!

    • As much time on the bike (road or trainer) as possible
    • Actually talking to people (about my businesses or not- just striking-up random conversations with random people)
    • Starting and finishing small software projects, especially those that have nothing to do with my profit-focused projects
    • Having deleted Facebook.

This is a great question, as self care and hustle culture are often at odds. I try to create a daily process which I stick to every day. Whether or not the results come in that day, I give myself credit if I do the following things:

    • Move my body (lifting weights, yoga)
    • Write out Grateful Thoughts (I try to do this as the first thing I think of when I wake up, but if not I make sure I do it every day)
    • Move my mind (learn a new skill, do deep work)

If I achieve these things, I go easy on myself and it's a good day regardless of what else happens. My process is my self care. I think the key to a daily process is that it needs to be simple and short enough that you can make it work regardless of the other things in your life.

That being said, there are often stresses I don't see coming and meditation is often not feasible in those moments. I've been working on Worry Kit (https://worrykit.com/) to help balance myself for in-the-moment stresses.

Self care is super important, as it's really hard to get back from being burned out.

I've been making sure to start my day with prayer, some personal development reading, and then a short (5-15 minute) meditation. It's been really helpful in keeping me destressed, focused, and preventing me from becoming frantic and worried about my day. It also been really nice finally working through my huge backlog of books as well 😛

Meditation, working out, reading, and writing down all the good things that happened to me or good things I did for myself on a daily basis!

Every Monday at my full-time job we do a 30 minute mindfullness meditation. I find it relaxes me and centers me on what really matters.

It has helped me adopt an infrequent (2-3) times per week mindfulness meditation habit that I always look forward to (using the Headspace or Calm apps). Now I just need to make it a daily habit :)
