Hey,
Just wondering how you guys separate business expenses from your personal expenses. I for example use Wise Business as a separate business bank account and have a personal bank account at a local bank.
Have been quite happy with it so far. How do you do it?
Edit for better wording: I like Wise as my business account - what do you use for your business?
It's simple, here is what you do:
Two bank accounts.
The business account gives a "salary" to the personal one.
And thats how you get by.
Just have 2 bank accounts. One belongs to you, another to a business.
I've seen bootstrappers start an LLC for these purposes (see services like Doola that make this quite easy). The nice thing about LLCs is that they're "pass-through entities", meaning you don't pay corporate/federal taxes via the company, but only when you transfer the funds to yourself.
Being a full time designer, I don't need big amount to use it in my business expenses still looking forward to build a product I save 30% of my monthly income for this and 20% for Investments. Remaining 50% amount goes for my personal expenses.
As a contractor, as I have my own limited company with a separate business account, so it makes sense to use that.
I think this is the only realistic way to go, especially once you start paying for things like advertising, software, hardware, and then start receiving money.
Keeping track of all that with 1 account would be a nightmare, especially when it comes to paying taxes.
So just yourself a favour and get a business account. Simple 🙂
Are you just using your local bank for both?
I use a popular national bank for my personal stuff, and a separate national bank (with visibly different branding) for the other. This makes it easier to distinguish between the 2.
Definitely two accounts, avoid commingling of funds.
Here is a good 2min read !! https://www.zenbusiness.com/blog/commingle-funds/
Thanks!
In my case, I have a bank account for my company & 2 personal accounts.
Most of the expenses for my company are made using corporate credit card (eg SaaS subscriptions, domain hosting etc) while other expenses are made on my personal credit card
This helps me keep things organized and avoid tax complications :)
Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much how I do it as well. Got a business credit card for corporate expenses. Are you using wise, or just another local bank?
I'm actually using a local bank account :)
In the beginning, I didn't really separate them. But when business expenses grew, then you have to! Just 2 bank accounts.
Yeah, I found it better to separate for accounting purposes. Are you using just your local banks?
Started with just using my local banks. But I incorporated in the USA so I opened a Mercury account.
Interesting. Thanks for the reply! Will check out mercury
I have everything in one account but to be honest I don't spend a lot of money to maintain the WBE Space. I mostly spend time. So the question should be, how do you separate your business time with your personal time... For which I do not have a proper answer XD
Always tricky to separate the time spent. I actually use a tracker to keep the time. Not affiliated with them, but I found it quite cool: https://timeular.com/tracker/
It's a cube and you can assign a specific activity to each side. To track any time, you can just turn the cube. Gives you insights and stuff like that. Comes with a mobile and desktop app.
I believe most people have separate bank accounts.
I should have worded that better. I was wondering how many are using some account + wise business, or some account + some other bank/same bank. My bad
lol oh okay, I got in now. Sorry I wasn't a lot of help =)
Haha, all good :)
Same way. I would imagine most people do it that way, or if not using Wise, then by having another bank account just for business :)
