How do you split your time between development and sales/marketing?

Hi IH!

I started working full time on a new product in mid-may. It's one-click video messaging with your workplace team (as a desktop app). For when you want to share a quick idea or thought, give someone feedback, or give an update on what you're working on.... but don't want to schedule a 30 min zoom call.

9 days ago I got my first paying team (14 people). Felt great! But now that the high of that has wore off, I'm realizing getting the second customer might be even harder.

I'm just one guy, so I'm spending all my time iterating on the product based on feedback from this first customer. It doesn't leave a lot of time for marketing/sales. My goal is to get to $500 MRR by the end of September.

How do you decide how much to focus on improving the product based on feedback, and switching gears to sales/marketing? I want the product to be better for the next team that uses it. But on the other hand, I could spend forever making it better.

My original idea was one-month dev, one-month sales. I realized those gaps were too big so then I was thinking one-week dev, one-week sales.

The reality is, I do a bit of sales in the afternoon/evening when I'm brain-dead while watching TV and otherwise being unproductive.

i track the most meaningful metrics (cost vs revenue) then derive other metrics as children of one of these two. whatever i do will either target reducing my cost or increasing my revenue.

in your case, you might want to score any activity you are doing on:

    1. are you doing this work to increase your revenue or decrease your cost
    2. what is the likelihood of this work to be successful (a feature that a potential client will for sure sign up once its live, is different than a feature that you hope will get potential clients attention)
    3. how long will it take before this unit of work is completed
(you might want to add more to fit your needs but i find these are the most essential)

any work you are doing, whether its marketing, tech, finance can be scored and your to-do list will 1) feels more organized 2) justified why you are spending X hours doing Y
